I make much more of an effort to support my favorite local breweries via $8-10+ bombers than I do acquiring highly sought-after releases. There are a few I do get excited and resourceful about, not many.

I've had plenty of both, depends what you are into. I also live in San Diego, so there are more awesome shelf beers than most other places. Also depends on style, because shelf barrel aged beers don't exist. When comparing like to like, a lot of "shelf" beers hold up.

In Oregon our shelf beers kick your whalez to the curb.

And yet, your last tick, very recently, was Schlafly's TIPA which while good is far from whalez bro. What say you Biff?

I know what you mean. I bought a Persian cat and it was just so cute and fluffy I opened the door and let my two Himalayan cats run away. F it. Go big or go home.

Not to mention way past it's prime :stuck_out_tongue: I didn't see anything I'd call a whale on a glance of the first page. Saw a few "upper tier" shelfs like FIS, and a few out of season/past prime reviews like Founders Harvest and RuinTen. But I didn't see a single BBA Bigfoot... and he calls himself a full-blown enthusiast!

I disdain anything that comes off a shelf and have had all the shelves removed from my house.

Will only buy beers that come in lambic baskets or similarly adorned.

I have a couple staples I drink, particularly in the summer months the easier to drink, sessionable beers like Weihenstephaner will be drank more often. Odell Myrcenary and stuff like that too. However, I really am down to just 1, maybe 2 beers a day. But once a week a friend of mine and I get together and drink the really good stuff that we had to trade for. And I'm sorry, but HF IPAs have ruined me for shelf-sitters. Sours are another problem. I prefer pale sours, and they're more refreshing frankly. But the number of those that sit on the shelf, even in Texas home of Jester King, is pretty few. So I end up trading for most of them. That isn't to say I won't buy several four packs of Festina Peche, but my tastes just can't be satisfied by what I find on the shelf most of the time.

I voted Occasionally/Specific Beers only because I drink homebrew on a regular basis and only buy things like Fantome, JP, or other things that are hard or impossible to make.

9 beers out of 10 are shelf beers. Gotta save money somehow!

This statement is the exact antithesis of a "full blown craft beer enthusiast."

This makes you a full blown craft beer elitist.

You're perpetuating the "walez bro" mentality that is making this such a hipster-infused hobby and community that revolves around one-up-manship instead of true appreciation and collaboration between advocates.

I have neither the time nor money to go walez hunting. The closest I've come is finding local stores that carry Westmalle and Rochefort, never mind Cantillon. Why bother hunting for beer I can't afford?

I am a shelf beer person. I like the idea that I can pick up great beer at the grocery and that's where I am shopping for food already right? It's a big pain in my neck to go trotting around town to the only two beer shops and to find lots of old beer and only a few overpriced bombers for a selection.

Bigfoot with a year or 2 on it works better than SNPA for bidet duty.

I find there's way too many shelf beers that I want to try and ones that I've tried and want to try again too worry so much about these whales you speak of. And I'd much rather have a 12 oz bottle after a long days work of something common off the shelf then a bomber of rare. Save that stuff for special occasions or when I can put a lot of time into drinking it.
