I bought a 500ml bottle today that cost 14.99 and it made me think about what a six pack would cost of that same beer. If you consider that 500ml is 16.9oz then this particular beer is .89 per oz which is 10.64 per 12 oz bottle which is 63.86 for a six pack !!! Wow!!! KBS at 5.99 per bottle seems like a good deal to me now.

I remember a point in my life where I would not spend over 6.00 for a six pack. I guess until today I did not realize what I am actually spending. When you have so many different sizes of bottles instead of the standard six pack it is easy to forget what you are paying. Is beer really that expensive to make?? I guess I understand now why there are so many breweries opening and many of them are expanding. Seems like there is a great deal of profit.

I think after today I need a new strategy when it comes to enjoying beer. I need to enjoy the 60+ dollar six packs on special occasions and find a good tasting 6.00 six pack!!

FWIW, I just bought a sixer of Dancing Man Wheat today for $6.99. I also trade, so the cost disparity is vast, but that's true with many hobbies.

Even Bud Light isn't $6 a six pack.

    Cliff notes:

He spent a lot on a bottle. Tried to figure out cost per six pack. Realize he can't afford to only drink whalez/rares. Needs to find a way to drink cheaper.

I had a similar epiphany several months ago. Since then I have been drinking ungodly amount of SN Pale and Torpedo. Ive cut my bomber consumption down to maybe one a week. I also almost never buy bombers of IPAs/DIPAs anymore, with the exception of Boy King when its available.

Now I am not sure about where you live, but here in SC there are effectively no $6 sixers except the AAL stuff. The best I can find is around $8 a sixer for the SN regulars. Things like Stone IPA and Two Hearted at usually $11-13. I can get Gose for $10 a sixer and drink a bunch of that this time of year.

I made a mix a six that had some world wide stout and rochefort 10 in it that was like $40+ bucks...yeah.

Forget singling out beer...I've noticed things like milk and juice drinks that I purchase going up 10%+ in one week, seemingly out of nowhere. Must be getting old, but...

From what I understand, these increases are linked somewhat to logistics and the simple cost of preparing products, but...to tie beer back in here really quick...

If someone selling a product (not just beer) thinks they can raise its price a bit more than it should be, and get away with it...they will. And in my opinion, while fully admitting that I haven't heavily researched all of the products I buy that have recently increased in price, this is what we are seeing with perishable items in general.

I was kidding about the $6.00 ...... I guess I just never realized the real cost of some of these beers. I do not think that the 14.99 beer that I bought today was expensive but when you calculate what it costs using something that everyone is familiar with ( a six-pack) then it is quite pricey. I live near the SC border and have some Gose, it is quite good! I also bought a 4 pack of Stone bombers at Costco for 12.99 and thought that is the best deal that I have ever seen!!

That must have been a pretty special bottle, though- what was it? I spent $15 on a 12oz. bottle once (for Captain Lawrence Rosso e Marrone, a barrel aged sour), and don't do that sort of thing very often. For an occasional treat that's one thing, but then there are a whole lot of $11 sixers averaging things out along the way.

It was not a "special" bottle, just one of many at that price. It seems as though that is the average price now for craft beer. I don't want to mention the brewery because I am not picking on them. I also bought a bomber for 21.99 and that would calculate out to be 71.96.........

OK- I was just curious. From where I stand, that doesn't seem like the average price of craft beer at all, so yeah, maybe you'd be better off heading in the other direction .

I had a similar epiphany when I thought a $7 bomber was cheap. Not really, if you consider the price per ounce.

…then I stopped caring and went back to my horrid spending.

Based upon what I'd usually pay for a sixer, say, twenty years ago, yes, these days I'm spending a lot more on beer than I used to. But lo, the beer I'm getting is also a lot better than the beer I used to get. Balance is maintained and the cosmos spins on.

The retail price of consumer products has nothing to do with how much they cost to make. Does a $200 pair of shoes costs 10x more to make than a $20 pair of shoes?

Thats why I rarely buy even a full bomber or 750ml at $15, let alone an even smaller 500ml bottle. Lots of great beer out there still available at a pretty good price, especially if your content with the quality year-rounds and seasonals that breweries are putting out these days. A $15 bottle is a treat, not an everyday occurrence.

Also, if you don't want to do the math, you can always use this: http://www.its-pub-night.com/2009/06/six-pack-equivalent-calculator.html

What beer was it? The only 500ml bottles I've seen around that price are Stone's Crime/Punishment/Souther Charred.

I have had the same realization, concluded I need to find a way to drink good beer cheap. Then I learned I like good beer, and because I like good beer, I am willing to spend extra money to indulge.
I do save my expensive beers such as Parabola, Sucaba, BA Old Rasputin, and others for special occasions.
