I was looking at the letspour entry for FW Stickee Monkee and it occurred to me that there aren't a lot of great American-made Quads in my eyes. Looking back at my reviews, the only two that stick out as exceptional are Pretty Things Baby Tree and Saint Arnold Divine Reserve #13. What are some of your favorite American-made Quads?

Weyerbacher QUAD (but it's really like a dark tripel), Weyerbacher Blasphemy (bourbon barrel-aged QUAD), Boulevard The Sixth Glass, Boulevard BBQ (Bourbon Barrel Quad). A lot of people love Ommegang Three Philosophers, but I don't and don't think it should be considered as a Quad.

Sixth Glass is pretty tasty. And since you mention Stickee Monkee, which is barrel-aged, I have to mention Boulevard's BBQ, which is outstanding.

    After that...

    EDIT:
Almost forgot about Three Philosophers. And if you want to get a little loose with your definitions of "quad" and "American", I think Maudite is good, but it's Canadian and it's listed as a BSDA.

Boulevard BBQ is killer. Also, Allagash Four.

Was Stickee Monkey brewed with a Belgian yeast strain?

Do Belgian strong dark ales count as quads? Canada is part of America (north) so I'd like to add unibroue tres pistoles to the list.

NO!! Victory V-12 is just plain horrible. The Reverend is just okay.

NO, they don't. Those are dark (black) and quads are brown.

Monk's Mistress is quite nice and for all intents and purposes, a quad.

I am allowed to have an opinion about the beer I drink. And in my opinion it is fantastic every time I have it.

While I like several (like Stickee Monkey), almost none of them taste anything like the better Belgian versions.
Elevation's Apis IV is one of my faves...but it isn't overly authentic.

I dunno... these "BDSAs" are pretty brown (and I've seen some pretty dark "quads"):

I think "quad" is more of a marketing term than really a true break from the general Belgian strong dark ale style...

I like Ommegang's Three Philosophers quite a bit, although it is brewed with Kriek, making it a bit of a hybrid, I suppose. Still, I think it's very tasty, and easily the best US quad I have yet tried.

    Others:
NEBCO Friar's Quad: very, very good.
Boulevard's Sixth Glass: this didn't do it for me. Only had it once, but I wasn't a big fan.

Echoing the point on North American vice US: Rigor Mortis by Dieu du Ciel is only OK.

    Notable:
BSDA absolutely count, depending on the beer. Chimay Blue is a BSDA that is certainly a quad in style; BBC/SA Thirteenth Hour is called a Stout, listed as a BSDA, and drinks like a quad with Kriek (and is pretty good, too, I might add); and, as @LambicPentameter pointed out above, many BSDAs are brown, not black.

Good point. I guess that's why so many people are confused between Quads and BSDA. Maudite is technially a Dubbel. Rochefort 8 is weird, because 10 is a quad and 6 is a dubbel. 8 is between the 2...so it's BSDA. La Trappe came up with the style and it's good, but not great like Rochefort 10 and Westy 12. Kind of like Westmalle created Dubbel and Tripel.

How long has the term "Quad" even been around? In some of the MJ books and even in Garrett's Brewmaster's Table, they use the terms dubbel and tripel but rather than quad they call them "strong abbey beers."

See, I don't like any of those that you mentioned with the exception of BBQ which I haven't had and Three Philosophers which is awesome and I can't believe I overlooked it. The first three you named are too boozy IMO.

Ah yes, I was trying to remember which of Allagash's beers was a quad since they can pretty much do no wrong. Haven't had Four in a long time but I remember liking it.

Totally forgot about The Reverend, a very good one. I really wanna try the Southampton Abt 12 too.

Agreed. Not necessarily horrible, just poorly executed.

Too boozy? That's why it's a quad. They're all 10% and above. That's like drinking a DIPA and saying it's too boozy and too hoppy. Val-Dieu Grand Cru is great, but not American. ISO: Stickee Monkee.

Would add Revolution's 4th year beer and Une Annee quads as examples I have enjoyed recently.
