I've drank lots of Boulevard Bourbon Barrel Quad and was looking for one to send out as an extra and my liquor store guy was COOL enough to go into the cellar and get me this bottle. REALLY COOL of him. The extras went to something else they wanted sooooo....how could I go wrong???? I've never had an off bottle of this but the 2011 I am drinking tastes like there was some brett in there which isn't normal for BBQ as far as I know or for any of the bottles I have drank.

Anybody ever had an infected 2011 Bourbon Barrel Quad? I get it's a few years old but figured it would taste as good or better than fresh which is amazing. Still tastes OK. Not a drain pour but getting close to it and I might not drink the other half of the bottle. Odd. Anyone? Just doesn't taste anything like it should.

Note though that it was REALLLLY cool that they sold it to me out of their cellar. Really, really nice of them. Just tastes nothing like it should. More like a brett forward sour that isn't too good.

Wait, I'm confused. You bought it to send as an extra in a trade, but are drinking it instead? Ha.

You might not have caught it but I bought it as an extra to send to somebody (really glad I didn't) but as I mentioned extras went a different direction meaning they were looking for something else so I was really happy to keep it for myself and sent them some beers that were specifically what they wanted. I was gonna send them them the 2011 cause I thought it would be better as I have a 2013 downstairs. I was just asking the beer store if they had any in back as sometimes stores do as they can't display everything all the time. Space is limited.

I missed it too. Probably because you wrote three paragraphs to explain that a beer tasted weird.

Yah sometimes I'm not good at making a point in a sentence as others are. It's what I do. I feel like I have to explain everything and want to make it surely known that I was grateful for the bottle.

I'm glad college English is over. :stuck_out_tongue:

Oh thanks. If figured I wasn't the only one cause this one has been in the cellar at a liquor store and couldn't have possibly been in better conditions. Thanks for your confirmation.

I couldn't find any other references on the internet, but I know I have read it before here on the forums and have experienced it myself

I actually think that infected BBQ would probably taste good... It would be like a high abv flanders red with cherrys!

It tasted OK but it wasn't meant to be when your expecting a BBG Just not that great even if you wanted it to be something else. I'm sure there are some around. Try them out. You might like it? It was OK.

I'm also a bit confused, was it the Brett notes that lead you to believe BBQ was infected or something else? The reason I ask is that I had a BA stout w/ Brett at the De Molen brewery that was absolutely fantastic. The beer was a wonderfully aged stout w/ a nice touch of sour....Very enjoyable combo IMO. I would have brought this home, but unfortunately, it was only on vat, (as the Dutch say).

I wouldn't say that 2011 Bourbon Barrel Quad is "infected". We intentionally blended in a portion of sour beer to promote the tart, acidic character of the cherries added during barrel aging. 2011 BBQ was not pasteurized (as our barrel aged beers are now: http://www.boulevard.com/pasteurization-at-boulevard/) so with time, the bacteria and wild yeast will do their thing and the tart/funky character will become more pronounced.

This seems very odd. Was the same thing done to the original batch in late 2008/early 2009? Because that original batch was absolutely sublime & when I bought the 2011, it was sour as hell & nothing like the earlier batch. If both were intentionally "soured" then something went seriously wrong with the 2011 bottles, because they went "funky" in a huge hurry, while the original batch was smooth & beautiful.

I honestly can't recall if we blended in any sour beer in 2008. I'm sorry.
