So, this NPR story has been going around the last few days: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/20...ign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20140528 . And some quick and dirty math got me these numbers: Asheville 12 breweries (in city limits), population +/- 85k = 1 brewery for every 7083 people. Bend, OR has the same number within, 12, and a population of +/- 79k = 1 brewery for every 6583 people.

Now my real question; which town has the actual highest per capita? I submit Deming, WA. Population 353, 1 brewery = 1/353. Alright, what other small towns have a high per capita number?

Aufsess in Franconia (outside of Bamberg, Germany) has 4 breweries for 1321 people, for a ratio of 1/330. Some excellent breweries at that:

    C'mon. Places with 1 shouldn't count, right?

Why not? I think it's fun to see what little places will pop-up. Some town that produces 23,994 gallons of beer a year, in the middle of West Nowhere, Maine, that's interesting to me.

Parkdale, OR (home of Solera Brewing) has a whopping 266 people. The highest per capita I can think of with more than 1 brewery is probably Rosalyn, WA with 2 breweries for 900 people.

Just thinking about (very popular) places in Vermont, for example. Kinda makes it too easy. Beer should, in some way, be about community, IMO, and breweries need a viable, central one to serve. But I'm usually in the minority on most things on this site, so....

Seems like their brews are at least solid though: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/438/

And, if we're talking about the same little Vermont town, their brewery produced about 9,000bbl last year. As point of reference, a Brewery/brewpub in Santa Rosa, CA produced 10,600 at the brewery, and another 3800 at their pub, so they're kind of in the same ballpark with each other, production wise, despite a notable population difference.

Greater population does not make for greater community. Very small populations tend to have the strongest sense of community and support for each other. I'll bet a brewery in a town of 35 people is very much a part of that community.

FWIW, I grew up in a small rural VT town with more cows than people (no joke) and growing up I knew people and families for miles around, where they lived, worked, went church, where kids went to school, when people got sick or passed away, etc. I have lived in Philadelphia suburbs for over 10 years and I barely know my neighbors' names much less feel any strong connection to the larger community.

I used the list here on BA for both Bend and A'ville. Maybe no local has added them to BA yet, or maybe they don't have Bend addresses?

In the big city category, I have to think that Portland, OR, would win this contest handily. But I'm not going to do the numbers to prove my guess.

When I was curious earlier, I did PDX (again, as listed here, with a PDX address): 38 breweries, 603k folks = 1/15868. Just did Seattle real quick: 634k/30 = 1/21,133.

Small towns with one brewery shouldn't be on this list.

New Paltz, NY has 3 breweries for 7044 people, 1 for every 2344 prople

    Life is good.

    Butternutts Brewery in upstate NY.
Apparently Garrattsville only has 93 people...and it's DECREASING steadily, down 50% from 2000.
