Curious if anyone on BA is familiar with this old gift pack or knows anything about the beer inside. My cousin found a pack at her house that was given to her father in 1980. It's been stored fairly properly despite no one knowing it was it was around. Anyhow, my family in the UK knows that I am a big beer nerd so they are bringing it to me in August when they visit. We will likely open and hopefully enjoy them when they arrive, but just curious what we are getting into!

Oh wow! I honestly don't think I'd ever open that; just keep it as a collector's item. So very nice!

Agree Roguer. I'd keep it bottled. You can only be disappointed drinking it after 35 years I'm guessing. Very cool.

I drank a 15 year old home brewed holiday spiced ale and it was pretty good oddly enough. It totally changed my thinking on how long beers can hold up to aging. If that can taste that good after that long it boggles my mind people think actual cellarable beers fall off after only 4 to 5 years in some cases.

I'm not saying every beer can be aged for a long time like that but I bet there are way more than most of us could even imagine.

I think this is awesome. Please please report back with your thoughts!

I'd be shocked if it was actually good, but it'll probably be unique and interesting (hell, you've piqued my curiosity-as others have said, let us know how it is!). And if nothing else, that's an AWESOME glass!!!

Beer is meant to be enjoyed, but after 35 years... If the beer sucks then you'll regret opening them. You may get more enjoyment out of them by keeping them in tact, plus they'll probably retain a great trade value if you ever got tired of looking at them. I'd use that glass every Christmas though!

    Willikers!

I keep on staring at those pictures and, being of a Gemini nature, my hoarding side is going at it with my indulgent side all the while. I can honestly see both sides of whether to open them or not. The shame is that for the value to remain in tact, you probably couldn't just open one to check it out.

Maybe someone like @patto1ro is familiar with this beer and can offer some knowledgeable insights.

If I remember correctly it was a stronger Stout that was released once or twice. I think it was dropped because of an arrangement they had with John Martin. The Guinness Special Export brewed for them was supposed to be the strongest form of Guinness available. The Christmas Guinness had been stronger.

Not sure where I got that story from.

"A Bottle of Guinness, Please" says it was brewed three times: 1980, 1981 and 1982 but gives no further details.

Very cool. I think you've crossed the line of drinkable to collectable. Enjoy the aesthetics.

I wouldn't drink it either. Curious as I may be, my experience with old beer tells me that 35 years isn't going to result in an enjoyable brew. The set looks really cool the way it is right now; I would just keep it as a unique display piece.

There is no possible way it will taste as good as it looks intact. Actually, I'd wager there's no way it will taste good at all.

    Really cool set, though.

I stumbled upon a Rogue Dead Guy Ale a few years ago while going through some boxes. The only time I bought bottles of this was my first beer puchase after turning 21. At the time of finding the bottles I was nearly 30 so think about that... 8 years old RDGA. So I figured, WTF, cracked it and I think I enjoyed it more than I do fresh now :stuck_out_tongue:

My dad would save odd beers and such un opened so I thought "Save my fav bottle and first 6 pack bottle".
