Hey guys, I convinced the wife to take a day trip to New Glarus next week. Right now our only plan is to visit the brewery. Is there anything else worth while to see or do in NG any help or info is appreciated thanks from a friendly FIB

Check out Tyranena, if you get a chance. If you haven't had Devil Over A Barrel, it's extremely good stuff.

Have a beer and/or lunch at Puempel's Tavern in downtown NG. The sandwiches are great & reasonably priced. They have a great NG tap selection. Also, the historic art work on the wall is very impressive, (ask to hear the story). Well worth a lunch stop!! Lastly, the downtown has some very nice shops that your wife will really enjoy, (check out the Swiss chocolate shop).

Glarner Stube is awesome, the roesti (cheesy hash browns) are fantastic and the schnitzel is very good too.

    No way, really?!!11

New Glarus is basically in the middle of nowhere with nothing really to do, so the best option would be to head back towards Madison afterwards, which would also work well if he's traveling to and from on I-90. There's ~50 miles between New Glarus and Lake Mills, so it's not exactly a big deal for being able to see 2 of the best breweries in the state. Johnson Creek outlet mall is a few more miles down the highway, so compromises could be made.

Sure, if you want to shop, live on that side of Illinois, and feel like visiting a brewery with all the attractiveness of a large milking parlor.

Tyranena makes (some) good beers, but IMHO, there's nothing worth seeing at the facility.

And for some, there's LOT to do around New Glarus.

I've only been to each brewery once, but aside from drinking at the brewpub, I am not sure what you can do at Tyranena. That being said, the beers are dam good. Devil Over A Barrel is fantastic and +1 for the Glarner Stube. The perch sandwich is top notch.

Pick up a few dark chocolate turtles at the new glarus bakery... So good. I just ate at Puempel's today and I wouldn't recommend it for food (most everything is microwaved), but it's definitely worth stopping in for a beer and experiencing the atmosphere.

I live in New Glarus - my pic is the Bacon Mac and Cheese at Tofflers, one of the really good restaraunts in town. Also pictured there is the NG Black Top which is sadly not available right now.
I wholeheartedly recommend the Glarner Stube. The cheese curds and Gary's Bowl of Beef are amazing and my wife and I's favorite sandwhich is the red rueben. Puemples is a great place as well - great atmosphere, food and beer.

One place definitley worth checking out is the Sugar River Pizzeria. The owner is a real beer geek and he has ammassed an impressive beer fridge of bottles to choose from - reasonable pricing for most and last time I was there I had Dirt Wolf, Gubna and an Alpha King.

Enjoy your trip - there's lots to do here!

Yep, I think you stop at both, eat at one & have a beer at the other. Two very nice bars w/ lots of history

Go to the brewery first and get the tasting sample. I beleive they still give you a coupon book for town which includes a free beer at the restaurants.

I have always actually preferred the food at Toffler's to the food at Glarner Stube but they've recently made some changes to the menu The braised beef sandwich and Dad's meatloaf are both crazy good. If this is your first visit to New Glarus I'd suggest simply eating and grabbing beers both at Glarner Stube. The vibe more fits the Swiss attitude of the town and they carry 9 New Glarus taps, usually Belgian Red, a Thumbprint and a few seasonals along with the standard line. Gve the schnitzel sandwich a try. Also check out the size of the urinal. It's HUGE!

Maple Leaf Cheese & Chocolate Haus is a decent little shop just down from Glarner Stube. You can pick up some local cheeses. Ruef's Meat Market, also on the same block, is a good little shop too. landjager is like a drug and the bacon is tasty and sliced to preference.

Last but not least? Roy's Market. They have the cheapest NG in town. $30 a mixed case. Thumbprints and fruit beers are also available. Cheaper than the brewery. Enjoy, NG is a good day trip.

On your way home stop by Everett's in South Beloit. Good shop, trust me.

I could reiterate what everybody else has stated here, but I would also like to suggest- Governor Dodge State Park, House on the Rock, Mineral Point (which also has the Brewery Creek Inn), Bluemound State Park, and The Grumpy Troll in Mt Horeb. All of these places are within 30-45 minutes of New Glarus and plenty of stops can be made along the way.
