To me, the beer is always the point. I couldn't care less about the collaboration aspect. When I read about New Holland & Carhartt doing "The Carhartt Woodsman" the only thing I took away from that is that New Holland is putting a sessionable barrel-aged pale ale in a sixer because that's the part that interests me.

Founders could do a collaboration with Depends and call it "Porter in your Pants" and if the beer was good I'd buy it.

I don't see what the problem is with breweries partnering with new-brewery businesses in a joint venture. If the two sides think it's a good idea, what does anyone else care?

As long as the businesses involved are businesses I'm willing support and as long as the beer is good, count me in.

I think it makes craft beer appear more gimmicky than many people already think it is.

The collaboration aside, the beer does sound relatively tasty. Too bad it'll be brewpub only.

I say it's become besides the point because they only dedicated two sentences of an entire page to the beer itself. I, like you, care far more about the beer than all the other fluff.

Well, since this Dogfish Head venture is brewpub-only it's all moot to me anyway. I'll certainly be picking up some of that Woodsman though.

I think the Penn Tux is tasting great and it will not be brewpub only for long. We will announce a few cities where we will be sharing small batches on draft at select events in the coming weeks. I think there can be gimmicky ways into collaborations and authentic ways in. We say no a lot more than we say yes - - we just said no to an incredibly famous and controversial baseball player looking to do a project with us today in fact. We will gladly let beer/clothes lovers decide where this falls in the gimmick/authentic spectrum. We did our first clothing/beer collab - Squall - with rogues gallery almost a decade ago. What we are doing with Woolrich is way more elaborate and multi-layered with many trips between the two families and locations in Woolrich PA, DE, and NYC. We hope you will seek it out. And congrats to New Holland on their project I look forward to a swap with my pal Fred over there.

Stoked Sam came out of retirement to comment on my post!!

Sam, I meant no offense and I thoroughly enjoy your beer lineup, as I'm sure I'll enjoy this one at the pub this summer. The collaboration thing is just an interesting trend, and while this one is being done pretty tastefully, it seems to be a slippery slope towards gimmickry. Cheers!

So there's a chance this will be at the Brewpub on the 20th? Cause I really want to try it. Also will get that dress thingy for my wife, looks like something she'd wear!

    Good job Sam!

I have no problem with this collab, and as a fan of good flannel and fine woolen products, I'm glad they went with Woolrich. It seems weird to me that they went with the woodsmen theme on the beer but more nautical with the clothes themselves, but with DFH being a coastal brewery, I guess it will sell.

Now, after seeing New Glarus/Carhartt and DFH/Woolrich, the New Englander in me really wants to see an Allagash and L.L.Bean collab to put them both to shame. I can picture it now... Bean Boot Beer, brewed with moose antler and lobstah because you can't get more Mainer than big ol' swamp donkeys and cold North Atlantic crustaceans. Or we could get even more obscure with the beer and woodsman theme with an Alchemist and Johnson Woolen Mills or Smuttynose and Labonville collab.

But you could have made a beer with fruit juice in it and called it "xxx's Juiced". That would have been gold.

He came out of retirement because you called his project gimmicky, not because you are special.

Well, if this is anything like Squall (tried a 2 year old bottle that I found in the most ridiculous place), then I'm excited.

I'm not sure I understand the problem people have with two quality companies collaberating to exploit a mutually beneficial relationship. It's called good business.

Penn Tux was ridiculously drinkable. What a great beer.

There is a ton of overlap between certain businesses, their ideals, and their customers. Collaborations may be a marketing "ploy" but its an entry into a market where they think "this consumer base has a lot of the same characteristics as our consumer base...lets tap that' (how many for the pun) and I think that is awesome. It's just raising awareness for each company. The music and beer collaborations are great too...how excited are you when one of your favorite bands does a collaboration with a brewery? I was giddy when I heard of the DFH and Grateful Dead collaboration, giddy I say. I've been working with an environmental group and some local breweries in the Hudson Valley area trying to get a collaboration going because there is so much overlap between the "customer" bases. I hope beer lovers or environmentalists don't think its "gimmicky" its just "hey, I give a sh*t about this, and I give a sh*t about this...lets make those worlds collide and get something going".

As long as the clothing company doesn't want to put some of its goods in the brew kettle just for shits and giggles, I like others, just care what the beer tastes like.

I think it actually gives credibility to craft beer. If a well-established, long-standing company (which both Woolrich and Carhartt are) is willing to partner with a craft brewery, it suggests that the brewery must be doing something right. An it has the potential to expose new consumers to the beer.

Just imagine a day in an ideal world where you could see the DFH #60 car whipping around the Nascar track, or see the Redwings playing at the Founders Arena. :grinning:
