    Hi all,

I am getting married in just over two weeks and was hoping to open a special beer with my groomsmen the day of as a way to say thanks etc... I was thinking Sam Adams Utopias since the hype (and price tag)really dictates you enjoy that on a special occasion. Any other suggestions I could target for this type of occasion? Really looking for some ideas.

    Thanks!

Heady Topper, DFH 120, Pliny, BCBS... Depends on your taste and what you can get. I'm getting married in October and I am already starting to think about this very same topic! I want to make sure I pick out something really nice that I know we will all enjoy. Congratulations by the way!

Congrats if you have time on a day as hectic as your wedding to break open a Utopias and share.

Hype and price should never dictate when a beer is consumed. A six pack of the beer you guys all used to drink when you were younger could be more meaningful than Utopias.

So my advice, screw something with the over the top price tag. Get something that has meaning, not something that has meaning just because it's expensive.

Before my wedding (nearly two years ago), my best men, ushers (groomsmen) and I went to the local pub near where I was getting married in Scotland, and we each had a couple of pints of Tim Taylor Landlord.

Not a "special" beer in the BA sense, but it was a great beer and a great moment

On the morning of my buddy's wedding we had to take a bunch of pictures. He was getting married at the beach and it was a gray day (pictures actually came out great). In any event, there is this little shitty Irish bar called The Joyce in Matunuck, RI near where we were doing pictures. The rumor was that they sold brunch on Saturdays, so post pictures we showed up only to find the door locked. In reading the posted sign we saw that brunch was served on Sundays. Bummer. As we walked away in disgust we heard the door unlock behind us and the owner came out (and actual Irish immigrant, which was nice considering most Irish bars in this country are some chain restaurant that lack any authenticity). A employee followed and said, "we couldn't let guys dressed nice as you just walk away." The opened up just for us and we crushed Guinness and Lay's potato chips, two products I have little interest in. Let me tell you this though, those were memorable beers that we all enjoyed thoroughly.

    See OP, no Utopias needed.

I love beer. But on the morning of my wedding, it was good old fashioned hard liquor. Actually, it was literally an Old Fashioned, from the history Drum Room Lounge in the Hotel President in downtown Kansas City. I found that the setting and having my good friends with me mattered far more than what I was drinking.

That said, I got my groomsmen beer chalices custom-engraved with their monograms to thank them, so I can understand why the choice of drink might be important here since it's partially about thanking them, and not just about having a drink with your friends.

In that case, I think Utopias is a good idea too. Not so much because of the big price tag, but because it's a special, one-of-a-kind beer (so I've heard) that is nothing like any other beer you (or they) have probably ever had. If they appreciate beer on any level, I would think they would be thankful.

That SA would be cool, if your friends would like that stuff. I know on my wedding day I didn't have much time alone so if you can fit in a beer like that then do it, but maybe the day before. Good luck and congrats.

its the people you surround yourself with and the situation you are in that will create the memories. the headiest of beers only add to good times, not make them.

a couple of good friends tied the knot a few weeks ago. theyre huge jester king nuts, so their first beer and first dance as a married couple was (to) la vie en rose. it meant a lot to them, so it was a cool moment.

i would suggest making a similar plan, drink something that has meaning to you. drink what has gotten you through hard times, go for a favorite or whats most likely in your glass on any given day, maybe something youve celebrated with in the past. i would stray away from something new, unless its balls to the wall epic. its a time to remember the steps in life that have brought you to this moment. drink in honor of that.

Hell, we cracked open cans of Yuengling Lager while we were getting pictures done on my wedding day.
Which happened to take place outside of the old Yuengling mansion in the yard. Schuylkill County wedding all the way!

I know you will appreciate whatever you open, but will your Groomsman?
If not, why waste the beer. Save the Utopia, Rare, ..... for later on and enjoy it during a quiet moment.
Open something that most of you will enjoy (cheap beer, Bourbon, Champagne).
