I need some enlightenment. I am sure everyone has read reports over the years about formaldehyde in Chinese beer. Supposedly they stopped putting it into beer because of consumer complaints. In general, could someone who knows more about the topic of formaldehyde in beer shed some light on this for us? Is there formaldehyde in US beer (or any other beer that is exported into the US?)

Perhaps brewing my own beer is best. I have never believed microbrews to put formaldehyde in their beers, but the multinational brewers may. It would really be sad if cancer causing formaldehyde was put into beer.

Probably not formaldehyde directly, but if there is any methanol in the beer (which happens to a small degree in brewing but more prevalent in distilling), that gets directly metabolized into formaldehyde as a byproduct (which can consequently be degraded further)... the answer is yes and no.

If there were any formaldehyde in our beers I think that fact would have been made known to us many years ago by our government agencies or consumer protective advocates.

And I hope no one here opens my eyes for me!

This is all well& good, but as a rule I try avoid any food or dog treats for that matter from China. Used to be used in Asian beers at least in the domestic markets. I would doubt that for imports these days. I used to be able smell that that stuff coming through my pores after a big night out in the ville in South Korea. ( 86 & again in 95 )

Well, technically, you could be well preserved in Alcohol as well. >grins<

Don't believe I have ever tried a beer from China, probably never will now.

There are plenty of food additives in the US that are banned in other countries too. We're not really all that much better off.

When I see a fraction of the number die here, that have died in China over the last 5 years, I'll get more worried. At least here the threat of a lawyer every other mile keeps our evil corporations somewhat on their toes...

A major part of the reason Chinese are dying and facing horrible illnesses is from chemicals in manufacturing. It's not all just food. Benzene is a major culprit.

My point is they could care less about their own, what makes you think they are fretting about passing along safe product to anyone else? Not thrilled with all my food choices here, but they scare me far less than anything coming from there.

Not trying to argue. Your points are all valid. I was just reminding everyone that none of us are really safe anywhere.

Agreed, but I should emphasize I feel way less stress on the craft beer I drink & even some of ever so less frequent not craft beer for additives than I do any of my food. I will always trust some countries product more than others. I do expect my Government to have my back on any beer/food coming here.

You are correct none of it is above scrutinty/ suspicion
