In the same tradition as our Batch and Wheat Series,’ we are proud to announce The Planet Series.

It will feature seven different beers each inspired by a different piece of music from the composer Gustav Holst. Each beer will be limited and released both in six-packs and on draft according to the arrangement of Holst’s composition across all area’s we distribute to.

The first Planet beer will be released this August with each successive entry debuting about every two months after. The final beer is scheduled for release in July 2015.

“Our two most successful brands come from a couple of my great literary references. This time, I took inspiration from a great piece of music,” said Larry Bell, Bell’s President and Founder.

“This piece, being in seven movements, gives us a lot of freedom to innovate and create,” he added.

Holst conceived the idea for “The Planets” in 1913 with the first complete performance occurring in 1920. Each movement of the suite is named after a different planet and its corresponding astrological character

    The lineup:

"Mars, The Bringer of War" – Double IPA

"Venus, The Bringer of Peace" – A Blonde Ale brewed with honey, apricot, vanilla and cardamom

"Mercury, The Winged Messenger" – A Belgian Single

"Jupiter, The Bringer of Jollity" – A malt forward Brown Ale

"Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age" – A Bourbon Barrel-aged Barleywine

"Uranus, The Magician" – Black Double IPA

"Neptune, The Mystic" – A beer inspired by Dr. Bell’s Medicinal Stout, one of Larry Bell’s homebrews that also helped inspire Eccentric Ale

More information will be released as it becomes available.

This seems pretty awesome. Most excited about Saturn, a bourbon barrel aged barleywine!! All of them released in six packs periodically from now until July 2015. You read that right. A six pack of BA barleywine from Bell's. Get that hype train chugging.

Not that I know of, but it would be somewhat silly to release 2 DIPA's in the same month. Maybe they will do Oracle 750's.

Saturn and Neptune sound good. What is a "Belgian Single"?

I hope Mars is the same beer they had at the Cafe as Larry's Latest DIPA last year, that beer was maybe my favorite hoppy beer I've had from Bell's.

Jesus. Oracle 750s. All of the hops ever. That'd be nuts.

Could be. I know Founders runs test batches of beer before officially releasing them under a different name, not sure if Bell's does as well.

Basically a standard Belgian ale. From what I understand, you have your everyday Belgian ale. Then, a Dubbel is double the ingredients, Tripel is triple, and Quads are 4x. So, this would be the first one.

As the proud owner of a music theory degree and a huge music nerd, this is relevant to my interests. The Planets is a great piece.

Now if only Bell's would just get their asses back into Missouri :slight_frown: (or enter Kansas for the first time...).

So...Blonde Ale or Golden Ale then, right? But Venus is a Blonde Ale. We'll see I guess.

Venus is a blonde ale, yes, but likely fermented with standard yeast. Mercury, in theory, would be brewed with Belgian yeast to give it the classic Belgian banana/ester/clove flavor.

April just upped itself from arguably the most expensive beer month of the year in Michigan to the undisputed most expensive beer month of the year in Michigan.

A bourbon barrel-aged barleywine six-pack? Damn. I wonder what the price tag on that will be?

Anyway, there seems to be a little something for everyone here. I'm sure I'll grab whatever I can find. Luckily for me, I'm mostly interested in what will likely be the easier to find installments: Venus, Mercury, and Jupiter.

December takes the cake for me every year, between 4Elf, and Winter Solstice.
