What's the strangest box you've unpacked? Whenever I can I try to use a made-for-purpose bottle shipper, but a little over-optimism on my part has had me recycling the packing from packages I've gotten recently. Some of these though...

Cut up pool noodles seem to be close to standard these days.

Wadded newspaper wasn't surprising, noticing that it was all the escort section from a regional free paper was amusing.

What seemed like the entire contents of the paper recycling bin -- junk mail, credit card applications, visa bill!

Torn bits of thin cotton in a floral print, including a bit of elastic waist band

    y'all are strange!

I have always covered the bottom, sides, and top of the box with this just as a safety measure.

I thought about that, but I'm not trying to shame anyone. All the bottles made it intact. Maybe we can start a gallery.

I have used newspaper (usually the free regional arts and culture rag) quite often. I can't remember where I read it, but someone traded with an engineer who specifically requested newspaper filling over peanuts because of the weight to elasticity ratio or something like that. It is funny though when you see the escorts section.

Not only the escort section, JUST the escort section. From more than one weeks paper.

I received a box yesterday with a ton of cotton filling (think stuffed animal filling) that was used as padding at the bottom of the box. Like enough to make a pillow. That was a new one for me. But like I told @mhenson42, that package could have been run over by a tank! Double-boxed, no movement, and plenty of padding. Probably in the top-3 best packed trade boxes I've received out of 100+.

I too received old white tees as filler. No stains, no harm, no foul.

Old YMCA dish rag, clean, a couple of years back.

Washed it & it's still being used in my kitchen to this day.

Good call @pmoney ....That's exactly what it was. The stuffing from a huge stuffed tiger I won for my son at Sea World many years ago. It was too big to fit in the garbage can so I started cutting it up and thought the stuffing would make great padding for beer shipments so I saved it all. Yours was the first box I've sent out with that... Usually I surround the inner box with newspaper and peanuts.

When I recarpeted our house a few years back I saved all the carpet padding... That was great padding as well.

A great trading partner and friend occasionally uses diaper boxes to ship me beer. Thankfully no used diapers included !

I usually ship from work and I am in HR so I usually throw is some swag for extra padding. Company t-shirts, tote bags, etc. Wife of the last guy I traded with loved the free tote bags.

For one trade, I sunk each bottle into 2-3 old (clean) tube socks.

Last trade I sent out I used just a bunch of empty gallon size water bottles. Works fine.

No one needs to buy materials, unless your mailing something pretty rare.

Last week I got two bottles wraped in shoping bags sitting on one sheet of bubble wrap with two scented trash bags as the only other padding in the box, luckily neither bottle broke even though half the box was caved in.

if anyone here orders from Blue Apron, their boxes come with some very hefty padding (and a decent box) that I re-use.
