Making a trip in mid to late July. I guess I'll have to rely on recommendations before I fill growlers.

Their whole pies have been great IMO. I've had the pork heaven, chicken bacon ranch and a couple others I can't remember the name of off hand. I have gotten a slice here or there but I often feel they've been sitting out a while and aren't as good, quality wise as fresh made to order whole ones.

Yeah so can anyone give me some recommendations on what to get growler fills of? I was told definitely sunny side up amp'd...Anything else? not too big on sours. Like IPA's and Stouts. Open to anything else.

Wow they've got a couple IPA/DIPAs I've not tried yet but if you like a little kick in your beer their Spanish Dynamite is tasty. The Citrus Flip is also pretty good. I can't commonly on the frontside lipslide or the ninja snipa.

Their taps require a specific size growler, so you can either purchase their growlers or they will accept yours in trade. So, if you are bringing a fav growler that you don't want to trade, you will have to purchase theirs for the majority of fills.

Is this new? I've filled numerous other growlers there. The only one I knew they wouldn't fill is the 32oz swing tops.

Yeah I filled growlers that I brought with me there too.....they fill regular 64 OZ and the 32 OZ growlers. As far as the no samples, that does stink, but I am usually picking up growlers to take back with me to Meadville, so we just take chances on the stuff, and are usually never disappointed. Would it be nice to try a few things first to ultimately decide on what growler to get? Yes, but in the end, you really can't go wrong as mostly all their beers are tasty. I just see it as if I was in a bottle shop and buying a beer I never had anyways....god knows I spent more on a bottle I haven't had than a growler fill at Al's (which I think are reasonably priced)

But they don't sell bottles to-go (unless you recap them) so not sure how the comparison to a bottle shop works...

They sell bottles to go of other breweries so they are a bottle shop technically.

Try the stuffed cheesesteak piaza it's the tits.

Trust me just get a growler of their stuff if it sounds good. They really don't charge much for growlers at all and every beer if had has been good enough to justify the low price. I bring all of my own glass and have never been asked to trade mine out.

Obviously I'm a fan of theirs and recommend it to everyone I talk to.

I wasn't talking about them selling bottles of their stuff (also you can't "recap" their bottles for on site consumption as they pour it into glasses for you) ...

...but I was saying I treat the no samples like I were in a bottle shop making a purchase. I still get a growler filled and don't feel bad about not trying it first before taking it home, just like I would purchase a bottle at a shop and take it home without trying it.

It'd be cool to sample a few beers before purchasing one (either growler or a pint) but it's not going to stop me from going and ordering their beers, I have never been disappointed.

    Agreed 100%

I've been there and had no problem with the no samples. Just check out reviews of the beers on here first and get an idea. Buy a few glasses of beer there to have and then pick one. Not sure why it seems like that big of a deal. The prices are very resonable. I've never had a beer there I didn't like.

I have had no problems what-so-ever there. The no sample rule is not convenient, but having an entire glass of something I haven't tried is not so bad either. They have a decent selection of bottles (not theirs) as well. My family and I go there Mondays/Thursdays for the wing and pizza special. We love it. The kids get a plain cheese and we get a veggie pizza and like them both a lot.

Now for the beer...........I have not had a bad one. The Sunny Side Up is a fantastic coffee stout........highly recommend it.

@PA-Michigander I did go. Overall good beer. I had a killer headache so not having a flight option only allowed me to power through 2 beers and then I had to throw in the towel. The little amps coffe was on point, brought back a 1L and 2L growler of it. Got a few other growlers of their beer to go as well (hop tart and one other I can't remember at the moment). For me the big deal isn't the price, it's the fact that I still have to drive another 2 1/2 hours to get home, and cant afford to drink a good amount of beer without having access to flights. Like I said, this is literally the first brewery I've been to out of maybe 30 that doesn't offer flights or smaller samples. Another thing that I wasn't too big on is the fact they had to close my tab, and open a new one due to only being allowed to put so much walk out alcohol on one tab, and my girlfriend had to carry a specific amount since that is regulated as well.. All in all it seems like PA's alcohol laws just suck..The reason they don't do samples is because they can't give it out for free due to laws, but I still think a little disposable cup (maybe 2 samples for $1) would be a great idea. No extra glass ware, and make even more money. Pizza was good. They also didn't have an issue with filling the 5 growlers I brought, 3 of which were different.

Nice write up, I like reading what others think about the place. Glad you liked their little amps, it is the real deal. Blame PA for the amount of beer (192 oz I believe) that you can purchase before having to take it out to the car and buying more. Hopefully you enjoyed it enough to come back another time.

I went with a group on Saturday.

They will fill stubby 32oz (non swing top) and standard 64 oz growlers from any place.

We split a pepperoni stromboli. While it's not the best I've ever had, it was adequate.

They serve beers way too cold and will only let you get one at a time. So we basically had to sit there for 10-15 minutes to let the beer warm up.

Permasmile and Afternoon Delight were amazing.

Just make sure to wear orange jumpsuits to get the full prison cafeteria vibe.

Why do so many so called beer advocates complain about not being able to get samplers? Sounds like more people are ticking and badge whoring for untappd then actually drinking beer. Some places offer flights some don't not really a big deal. If its really so important to try so many different beers then take home a bunch of 32oz growlers, or go with a group and try each others beers. I can't wait to hear the complaining when the 750ml cork & cage bottles are ready to purchase. In reality Al & Terry have quietly been brewing some incredible beers that continue to impress as evidenced by the locals who fill the place daily and crush the taps. As for the pizza there are a bunch of choices but I'd recommend the chicken bacon ranch, cheese burger, cheese steak stuffed and buffalo chicken.

I think that's exactly the problem - if I'm going to buy 3-4 32oz (or 64oz) growlers, that's a lot of beer and a fair amount of money to spend blind to what you are purchasing. Also, while I agree that some of the beers are excellent, there are also a few that I liked much less than the description would have be believe.

It's not the end of the world, but a 1oz sampler or whatever is more of a courtesy than anything else.
