Has Surly dialed down Furious? It was my first favorite IPA six or seven years ago, but lately it seems weak. I've obviously moved into IIPAs, so I'd be curious to see if it has more to do with what I've been drinking or actually cooling it off.

I haven't had Furious in a couple months maybe, but last time I did it tasted the same as ever to me. Maybe your taste buds are just upping the ante with the IBUs?

That make sense, Furious and then Ruination were my gateways into hops. I've had it on tap a few times and it isn't as brash as I remember, and it probably has more to do with the IIPAs I've been drinking.

It does stink to lose it for a year, but yeah, only if it returns to the quality of previous year's. Last year's batch was nothing to get worked up about.

I "enjoyed" last years Wet. Was it as good as previous years, no, but it was still good. It did suck that you had to go on a wild goose hunt to get it, and it did suck that you were still paying $17-20 after tax for a 4pk of just "good" beer. There are a lot of good beers out there I can walk into the store any day of the week and purchase for a lot less.

Well put. Too often, it seems to me, a bad value proposition gets expressed as "Beer X sucks", which generates needless arguments about the quality of the beer itself.

I think it's interesting about how both this and the Pentagram thread naturally became so intensely focused on price/value concerns.

Although I agree with you, there is so much good (relatively cheap) beer out there, we as craft beer drinkers have many great options for pretty cheap. The market is changing and I think price will become more of a selling point moving forward. Just because it says *insert hyped brewery name here* on the label and its a limited release doesnt make it worth $X. I for one happily paid for 11' and 12' wet. 13' was not worth it, so its not general hate, its more specific than that.

    1st world problems anyone?

I'd say we're at the point of price being the main hang up. With the current craft beer saturation we're experiencing, we can be more choosy and price is a natural deterrent for a lot of folks. Surly makes great beer, but it's large format bottle pricing doesn't seem sustainable anymore.

Most beer geeks would give their left (insert here) to have access to their beers ... anyone want to run a popular brewery with major growing pains?

Threads like this give outsiders something to make fun of. ;-)

    Exactly ...

Yep, it's a first world problem. But that's where we live and I think it's perfectly understandable to want something for a reasonable price. Why should we be held hostage for exclusivity? And it's not just me or even just Minnesotans; I've had a few people who wanted Pentagram but decided against it when they found out the price. I think if there is a cheaper alternative, people are going to take it. It's economics.

If we never say anything, then nothing changes. Breweries either find out through feedback or their bottom line, and I bet they prefer the former over the latter. Surly has been seeing less turnover on the shelves and the beers that used to sell out instantly are hanging around longer. Maybe the whiners will stay in the minority and Surly will continue on its path unhindered, but I know that more and more folks are realizing the price isn't always worth it.

I would not be surprised of they expanded into other markets rather than try to lower the price.
