I really enjoy Chimay Red and Sierra Nevada Double Dubel. Is there an American brewery that specializes in doubles?

I've had Abita Abbey Ale and thought it was forgettable and a bit off. Ommegang has too much licorice for my liking. North Coast Brother Thelonius was a bit boozy if I remember correctly.

    Any suggestions?

I thought your post is about American Doubles as in Double IPAs. Might want to edit it. Allagash specializes in Belgians, but their Dubbel is just okay. New Belgium Abbey is pretty solid. My favorite is Ommegang Abbey Ale. I hate licorice and I don't get any while drinking it.

An Abita beer that was a bit off? Nooooooo. Say it ain't so.

Good thread. I too like Dubbels, and would love to find some good American versions. Will be following this thread for sure. Def. on the lookout for Double Dubbel from SN now that you pointed to it.

It is brewed with star anise (and liquorice root, which I actually think tastes less like liquorice), but when I found out I was shocked as I hadn't, and still haven't, gotten any real liquorice flavor in the beer.

I don't like a ton of American Dubbels. Ommegang is OK, but I don't love it like others here; Allagash is pretty good, but nowhere near up to the tastiness of their Tripel, and is thus a bit of a let-down. Brother Thelonious is listed as a BSDA here, but I think it is a pretty good option for a tasty Dubbel (a little sweeter than the others).

But really, if I'm in the mood for a Dubbel, I'm probably grabbing a Chimay, Westmalle, Rochefort, or St. B. They're too damn reliable and tasty.

Ommegang Abbey ale best by far in my book.
Never got any licorice in it.
    Different palates.
Maybe a nice Saison? Ommegang Hennepin is delicious.
(No, I don't work for them, I just love their beer.)
Next favorite is Unibroue. Try their Maudite ( SBDA )or their Trois Pistole ( quad )
    Good stuff.

+1 for Ommegang Abbey and Brother Thelonious. I hear Unibroue Maudite is good, but I haven't tried it yet. Like Brother Thelonious it's listed as a BSDA, but I think it's really supposed to be a dubbel. I had Rochefort 6 not too long ago, thought it was pretty lousy compared to others.

New Glarus did a Thumbprint Dubbel this year, it was pretty good.

I started my "craft" beer journey with Chimay red. They switched importers and literally overnight a case went from $87 to $115. That's when a friend told me about Ommegang. The Abbey Ale is very close in flavor to Chimay red, and Three Philosophers is one of my all time favorites.

This guy is a sleeper made under the direction of monks from a monastery near Abiquiu, New Mexico; I have enjoyed it immensely on a couple of different occasions from the bottle and on tap: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24136/108442/

This beer is all over New Mexico but I'm not sure about outside distribution.

Also, I believe Pere Jacques from Goose Island is a Dubbel and a good one at that.

Yeah, it was OK. I also think that the New Belgium Abbey Ale is pretty damn good and underrated!

Beat Doubles: I think Lagunitas Maximus and Great Divide Hercules are both pretty beat. Too much malt flavor, not enough juiciness.

Best Dubbels: I like Ommegang Abbey Ale and Brewer's Art Resurrection. For the price, I feel like Resurrection cannot be beat

Trois Pistoles is not a quad. Pere Jacques is another solid American Dubbel.

Goose Island Pere Jacques with 2-3 years on it is good. It's a bit different, but I like New Belgium Abbey Ale too. For me though, generally it's imported dubbels or GTFO.

I agree that compared to their two triples, Allagash Dubbel is a bit of a letdown.

Quad/BSDA/Dubbel/BDA are a spectrum, Trois Pistoles is borderline quad territory.

    Ommegang Abbey
    Boulevard Nommo
    GI Pere Jacques
Unibroue Maudite (listed as a BSDA, but on the spectrum of a dubbel)
NB Abbey (Flavor is excellent, my criticism would be that it's a little thin)

Why bother with American Dubbels??? The Belgians know what they're doing.

    Chimay, Rochefort, St. Bernardus, repeat.
