    Hey guys,

I'm sure that others have thought of this, and there may even be threads devoted to this neat trick, but I did something over the weekend that ticked off a lot of my friends who happen to be beer snobs. Many are even posters on this website.

Well, I bought Bud Light and invited my friends (7 in total) over my apartment. I went into the kitchen and poured them each a glass of the aforementioned beer. I told them it was a new craft lager produced by Anchor Brewing. After consuming a sufficient volume, I waited for all of them to heap praises on the beer (which they did). I then informed them that they had just consumed Bud Light. The rage expressed in their stares was something of a primordial hatred that cannot be conveyed through the English language.

Needless to say, they're never coming over my apartment to perform a blind taste test ever again.

My uptake: many self-proclaimed beer 'experts' really don't have as well-rounded an experience as they think they do, and should probably take the time to learn the difference between the many 'pale lager' styles.

Also- many other 'know it alls' still tend to refer to the brewery as Anchor Steam, thereby giving themselves away .

I think it would be interesting to do with a different beer in the opposite direction. Like if you could obtain some Three Floyds Zombie Dust or Gumball Head and tell them that its the newest crafty attempt by Budweiser... I guarantee that people will turn their nose up to it.

Overall, thats funny because Bud Light does one thing and they do it well, but a lot of people would turn their nose up to it. Just because its a Bud Light.

Funny and very fair. Just had a blind tasting with Heady, Pliny, and Enjoy By 7-4-14. Guess which came in last for both tasters? HT......and Enjoy By was tied with PtE!

I've only had their steam beer and thus usually refer to it as Anchor Steam.

I really find it hard to believe, even in a blind taste test, that any living human being with functioning taste buds would ever praise that vile swill

In all fairness I know better and still call it Anchor Steam from time to time.

I tend to agree. My brother recommended that I punk them with Yuengling instead. Bud Light worked just perfectly.

Same here. I edited the original post. I've always called them Anchor Steam because it's their flagship beer. Just like I refer to The Alchemist as Heady Topper.

Anchor is the only one I've caught myself calling by the beer name. At least the Alchemist pretty much only makes Heady Topper, so there's not too much confusion.

I concur. If a person can't tell the difference between a bad lager and a good ale they clearly don't drink much.

I was at a wedding and the people pouring from a keg had no idea what they were pouring. At first sip I could tell it was a very marginal adjunct lager. Later I learned it was pacifico.

That's cool- it's just a personal pet peeve of mine, and the remark was (mostly) tongue in cheek.

Really? I've heard that the other beers by The Alchemist are also quite good. Never had them, though, and I often forget the name of the brewery that produces HT. I usually call it HT with guests.

That's fine. I didn't mean for the prank to be nasty, but three or four of the guys took it pretty poorly.

As for pale lagers, I'm familiar with Pilsner, Vienna and American adjunct lagers. I'm not sure what other beers are included in this category, but I know that they typically use lighter-kilned malts and Pilsner hops. I like pilsner and vienna lagers, but the adjunct beers can't make up for the displaced barley, IMO.

I've never visited the brewery, but to answer your question, I would probably call it Heady Topper since most people I talk to know them by their flagship beer and not their actual name.

    1) I love this prank.

    2) I mean, I had a bomber of VooDoo #22oztofreedom and you know what, it tasted like a malt liquor. I was absolutely thrilled to try it (a regular, awesome trading partner sent it as an extra), but it just wasn't very good even though it said VooDoo on the bottle.

So I guess if I had a Bud Light in disguise, I imagine I'd say "well, still tastes like a pale lager to me"...which I don't like. But I'd have to say that Bud Light is probably one of the least offensive cheap macro brews out there. So I'd say it's a decent representation of a style that just doesn't taste very good to me.
