    Now this was funny!

I could see myself making the same mistake with a beer like Yuengling, though. I just think it's a great beer even though I get a little bit of flack for drinking it. Is there a mass-produced beer that you think is comparable with something produced by a microbrewery?

I've never drank malt liquor; I might like it, lol.

I think the problem with Bud Light is in the adjunct grains. I think if they used 100% barley grains it would actually taste quite good.

I remember visiting the Anheuser Busch facility at Busch Gardens when I was a kid and sneaking a sip of Bud. when I was a kid. I loved it

You should definitely give the Anchor California Lager a try; it's quite good, and 100% malt. It's not just the richer, almost bready, malt character that would separate it from the Bud Lights of the world, but it also has a definite hop bitterness going for it. That would be the first thing I would probably notice, actually- 'where's the hops?!'.

Now that is a brilliant idea.

This is why the double blind tasting is a liminal experience for all involved.
Everybody on this site should do it at least once.

But of course our experience of any food is colored by knowledge beyond what is obtained through our senses. Hell, even the color of a beer glass changes my taste experience of it ..all the time

as for the HT PLINY IPA blind test thing...

Dont be surprised. Ive done the heady/pliny and (one or more ) other DIPA taste test several times with small groups.

protip: use colored glasses cause many IPAs when side by side appear very different in color

Heady never wins; Pliny rarely does.
Even with people who claim one or the other is their favorite IPA
(Abrasive, on the other hand, holds it own...)

That's fair. I don't know that my palate is sophisticated enough to pick out the corn in Bud Light (definitely taste it in most malt liquors). But I've also had Spotted Cow and Jinx Proof. Pretty sure there's not way I would be able to tell the difference between Spotted Cow and Bud Light. But what better beer for New Glarus to grab hold of those that enjoy the Kwik-E-Mart standards and get them onto their own beer.

LOL. That's a good point. You can't really smells or taste any hops in American adjunct lagers (at least none that I know of).

I actually made a mistake before, though. I have tried another Anchor beer. My brain must've blocked the memory, though, because I remember not liking it. It was a brown ale (cannot remember the name) that had too many cascade and chinook hops. It's just that, for me, I feel that a brown ale should have a greater malt presence; there were too many hops for me to enjoy it as a brown ale. It kind of destroyed my expectations.

I've done this with Sam Adams Boston Lager, a very fresh batch. I laughed my ass off at how many SA haters actually said good things about it.

That's a bad thing? I like SA Boston Lager (fresh - aged has a lot of off tastes that shouldn't be present in a lager). Surprised they got mad over that.

That's Brekle's Brown, not their best from my point of view either. I thought it was a citra hopped beer? Either way, the balance was all off for me as well- too much caramel, and it seemed to clash with the hops.

However, something more old-school like cascades can definitely work in an American Brown Ale; Pete's Wicked built an empire on the notion  (well, until it all went to hell...)

Well, lot of people talk trash about Sam Adams, consider it not a craft brewer, etc. It's too mainstream for them. I love them and defend them, and this was my best reply I could have given to our petty rants over the years - blind tasting it cut through the biases.

OP, I love the prank you pulled. Some people drink craft because they like the taste. Some people drink craft for some sort of coolness factor or something, I don't know. I'm guessing a few of your friends were the latter, since they were so easily fooled. Well played Sir.

god i would be so grateful if someone did a blind tasting with me and showed me that bud light is as good as anchor's lagers. would save so much fucking money.

You're correct (just looked it up). However, if I recall, I believe both chinook and cascade were part of the strains of humulus lupulus used to create citra. Could be wrong, though.

Actually, that was a sarcastic shocked face at Heady Topper coming in last. Heady is good but #1 DIPA? Pfft.
