A buddy of mine did something similar during his birthday party. He had his gf brown bag cover 5 shitty beers, Miller Lite, Miller High Life, Bud Light, Corona, and Natty Light. We all then had to sample them and guess which one was which. Basically, did this to see who really could tell the shitty beers apart. My buddy got 3/5, I got 3/5, mixed up the Bug Light and Natty Light. Only 1 friend at the party got 5/5. Although many of the so-called experts got them all wrong. I like doing things like this or what was mentioned by the OP. Shows the snobs, they really don't know their beer as well as they think.

No. And trust me both of us were surprised by the results. But the pourer loved it! So maybe the Heady was old, or maybe the Heady wasn't taken care of well on it's trip from Vermont, but maybe Heady.........

No way I could do that, and I'm sure many people on this site couldn't either. But then again, I doubt many of us ever drink those beers anymore to really be able to pick them apart.

first lol you don't know him

to the post in general I think the guy with SA's would definitely get me I go in knowing I will probably be disappointed in a SA beer so I'm your target audience.

the original post this is hilarious and hell I might be one of your victims bravo for blasting the pretentiousness but I will say one thing for all Big beer companies you think they get many complaints about batch variances nope they crush it every time that in of itself is amazing

    Absolute fantastic post OP!

As I always say, anyone that thinks all lagers have that "lager smell and taste" have an untrained palate.

Not that any of us at the party regularly drink them anymore, but we were having a throwback to our college days when those were the beers we could afford and didn't know any better. And as someone just said, not all lagers have the same old lager taste and smell.

Actually blind tasting has been known to show many people, whether snobs or not, that they don't know their beer (or wine, or whisky) as well as they think....

I would truly like to think that I would not fall prey to a prank like this, and honestly I don't think I would. However, one never knows. Catch me on an off-day and I might convince myself that Bud Light tastes like a real beer. One of the potential issues is that you biased your audience by telling them that the beer was from Anchor. This creates a "mental set" that even pros will have trouble shaking off ... One would try and try to find some merit in the brew and would likely wind up doing so, due to "imagination inflation", which is what happens when one thinks about a beer being good and thereby actually winds up tasting some legit merit as a result. You might repeat the "experiment" with no bias provided in the first place ... Your buddies might do better, assuming that they are well-practiced at tasting in the first place.

What I want to know how they could believe bud light is close to craft beer when it has no taste

A friend and I did something like this. My friend had the most incredible beer cellar of anyone I've ever met and knew a lot of industry folk. Anyway, once while the two of us were at a bottle shop that stocked Chelada I got the idea that we should buy a bottle, pour it into a bomber, cap it and give it to some unsuspecting friends.

At the next tasting they held, my friend stopped by and donated the bottle and then left. They decided based on the amazing cellar and industry connections that it had to be something incredible. I believe they eventually decided it was a beer from Three Floyds and then actually reviewed it (not here). I never got the chance to read the reviews but they were far more positive than they would have been had they known what it really was.

There's a reason why some of those "crappy" to beer snobs beers continue to take awards and it's because they do take actual and real skill to produce and that is something which is completely lost on beer snobs who like to talk tough but who have never tried their hand at brewing and cannot walk the walk.

This is why I goto the pub and ask the bartender "Surprise Me". I allow my preferences and tastes buds to say either "Hey I like this" or "Hey I can't drink this". It's fun like what beer is supposed to be about.

I think it's a solid, fun prank. Screw them if they got all snooty.

Here's another thing to consider, though: anti-BMC bias isn't the only bias in play. There's also a significant social aspect in play.

If you had presented me with the same challenge, in person, and then asked me my opinion, I'd be likely to not want to offend you, and thus present you with an impression of the beer that is more favorable, even if I didn't particularly like it. Neutral answers, like, "Hmmm, it's not exactly up my alley, but I see what they were going for," or, "It's not bad, but I'm not sure if it's exactly executed to style," are the sort of reaction you'd be likely to get.

Granted, the desire to please (or at least not offend) is not entirely universal; sociopaths wouldn't give a damn what you think. But the point remains the same: if you gave them a blind taste test of Bud Light, and had them record their experiences anonymously and uploaded to, say, BeerAdvocate, you'd be more likely to get an honest assessment.

Biases work both ways, is what I'm saying.

Wish I know any so called "craft beer snobs" most people I know would lick their lips at the mentioning of any free beer even Bud Light.

Btw Bud Light ruins my night of drinking no beer tastes good after I drink one so to contaminate your "friends" palates so harshly I guess a "good work" is in order...?

I'm glad someone in this stupid thread remembers the Black Xantus/Kaggen! prank. Probably the best one that's ever gone down.

When you say "blind" tasting, did you gouge out their eyes with an ice pick before the tasting? That's the only reason I could see someone losing their senses enough to think Bud Light was amazing.

This happened last night to me. I was at Max's with another BA. He ordered me Old Engine Oil aged in.. I forgot which barrel. All I know is that it was too vinegary upfront then the Porter qualities finished last. I couldn't drink it. I'm not a fan of that huge vinegar tartness. I sent it back. I apologized to the BA that ordered it for me. I keep it real with everyone. If I can't drink it, I can't. If I find it worthy, I find it worthy.

Can you guys do the funny reverse one with three Floyd's or toppling Goliath or whatever and tell me it's bud's attempt at a new "crafty" beer on me? It'll be hilarious.
