I second this (add Westmalle dubbel and it gets even better) BUT....there are some good American dubbels out there.
Goose Island Pere Jacques is amazing
    Ommegang Abby
    Boulevard Nommo even though non-traditionl
Lastly New Belgium Abby isn't a bad American interpretation of a dubbel

+1 for Ommegang's Abbey. But they're right you know... the Belgians have had enough practice. Until American monasteries get the "trappist" appellation, stick to import when not on a budget. (find the logical fallacy/joke at your leisure).

I agree with all the love for Abbey Ale and Maudite. I'll also second Brewers Art Resurrection, which is also available in can form.

Abbey Ale from NB, as several others have posted, is really outstanding. I've gotta get some - haven't had it in a while.

Rockmill Dubbel.. Rockmill is a small brewery in Ohio that focuses on Belgian styles.. they brew really good stuff, but their prices hurt..

That will be a task. To my knowledge it is local-only. It's just available at the pub and local bottle shops. I've only had it once myself at the brewery tour/tasting. It was pricey so I wasn't able to take a bottle home. :slight_frown:

Goose Island Pere Jacques w/ 1-3 years is magical, though a bit richer in the sticky dark fruit and toast malt departments than many imported versions. Ommegang Abbey is awesome too. My contribution to this thread is to suggest Crown Valley (south of StLou) Big Bison. Kitschy name maybe, but light toasty malt flavors, hints of raisin and fig, and a firm balancing bitterness. Ends dry, just like imports do...real sleeper, and in sixers for $11

I too love Ommegang Abbey Ale, been a while... I now see that I've never tried Pere Jacques, I must rectify that...

I apologize for being a smart ass, but the best American Beat Double was two Falstaffs consumed quickly by Jack Kerouac.

for me Lost Abbey Lost & Found and Dock Street Abbey Dubbel.

but, if we're talking North American then Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Double may be the best of ANY i've tried including all of the Belgian standards.

You should be able to find Sierra Nevada Ovila series Dubbel, Lost Abbey's Lost & Found, and you might be able to still find some Hangar 24 Palmero on shelves.
