If you're new to stouts, I would first suggest more readily available and basic, yet well respected selections. Don't delve into the most rare, prized, very high abv, or barrel-aged selections right off the bat.

Try to develop an appreciation for choices like these first:

    Bar Harbor Cadillac Mountain Stout
    Rogue Chocolate Stout
    Deschutes Obsidian Stout
    Founders Breakfast Stout
    Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout
    Rogue Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout
    Left Hand Milk Stout
    Guinness Foreign Extra Stout
    Southern Tier Choklat
North Coast Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout
    Stone Russian Imperial Stout

I would go with something like Wolavers Organic Oatmeal Stout or Brooklyn chocolate stout for starters

Brooklyn's black chocolate stout is a good go to and is readily available in season here.

Founders KBS certainly has the sweet taste from the bourbon on the back end. Maine Mean Old Tom is a vanilla bean stout that may appeal. Totally agree on Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro. If in MA, definitely Tree House That's What She Said.

One of my favorite stouts is Anderson Valley's Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout, it's phenomenal. If you want it REALLY sweet, try Samuel Smith's organic chocolate stout. It's a little too sweet for my taste.

I tried Full Tilt's Berger Cookie Chocolate stout last night and I really enjoyed it. I'll try to move on to some sammy smith's next and then maybe dive into some heavier imperial stouts

Milk stouts will generally be sweeter. If you're enjoying that, I recommend trading for some FFF Moloko when it drops. Seriously delicious. I don't care for milk stouts, but that guy is on a different level!

Beyond that, I think Founders offers a good gateway. Starting with Breakfast stout (as stated above you have to like coffee) and then their RIS. Not sure what's available out in Maryland. Stouts are an amazing style. I hope you can find what we all have.

    Cheers!
