A (noob) question about bottle-conditioned stouts.

As you all know, it's 4th of July; a holiday best celebrated with food, beer, and blowing shit up in the name of Freedom. With that being said, I have a 6-pack of Stoudt's Fat Dog imperial oatmeal stout in my fridge that I was planning on toting along with me to tonight's festivities (not the best choice, I know, for a 4th of July beer, but that's getting off-topic). My actual question here is: how reasonable would it be to drink straight from the bottle, considering it's a bottle conditioned brew? I'm a bit of a glass advocate, and have only consumed this beer from a glass previously, but with everything going on tonight I'd much rather not carry around an open glass with me. I feel like this is such a stupid question, but does anyone have experience with this? Or any kind of input as to whether or not drinking a bottle-conditioned stout from the bottle will absolutely ruin the experience?

And just to reiterate: I'm consciously aware of the fact that good beer should be served in its proper glassware, but sometimes that's not always an option. Please leave all snobbery and douchebaggery at the door before you answer my admittedly most-likely dumb question. Thank you.

Do you have a solo cup or something similar you can use. Always a better option to me.

Drink from the bottle. It won't kill you.

Good call. When drinking outside, anything in a solo cup = obviously not alcoholic by most social conventions. If carrying the bottle around is an option just drink out of it as option two.

Because it's the 4th of July, it will only kill you if you're not American.

But you should really drain pour those and celebrate with a Bud Lite.

There are no stupid questions...but in the name of freedom I say drink it anyway you can/like. That's the pleasure of being an adult:grinning:

This is a question that can only be answered by yourself since retaining the sediment in the bottle is a matter of preference to the particular drinker. I personally like to drink all bottle conditioned beers without excluding the sediment but that's just because I don't like to waste anything. I guess just drink one from the bottle and, if it doesn't taste right to you, pour the others into a solo cup like previous posters have recommended.

Solo cup is a better option, but DRINK IT ANY DAMN WAY YOU LIKE! But just enjoy it while you do!

Long story short: the Solo cup technically is an option, but my family, for years now, has taught the kids that "bottled drinks are for the adults only," considering they all drink beer from the bottle and typically only soda/etc. is served in cups. I wanted to avoid a potential fiasco due to having a beer in a cup. I know it's a bit overparanoid, but kids have been known to drink from any old cup on a table.

I just basically wanted to get an idea of if the sediment radically affects the flavor when it's consumed from the bottle, as I've never drank a bottle conditioner beer from the bottle before... Though, I guess my question will answer itself shortly.

Transporting the beer is likely to disturb some of the sediment, but you can try to be gentle with the bottles during this period. Then just be gentle as possible when taking a drink. The sediment is full of vitamins so it's actually healthy, but I personally think it mutes the peak flavor of the beer. Plan A is to drink from the bottle; Plan B is to use a Solo cup; Plan C is to leave the beer at home and take some cans of your favorite soft drink.

It's sometimes easy to forget, but it's just beer. It's just a wonderfully tasting, refreshing, intoxicating beverage. Sure, there are ways to maximize your enjoyment of it, but in the end there is no right or wrong way to drink a beer. So drink it out of the bottle, and if you decide the sediment is interfering with your enjoyment of the beverage, pour the next one into a cup.

If I bring a growler to a BBQ, I usually bring a few solo cups, preferably clear to enjoy the color. This works out well since I don't have to worry about bring a glass or bugging the host.

Yeah, don't sweat the glassware. A couple weeks ago me and a friend were on a trip and happened to run into a bottle of enjoy by at the store. All we had were some paper cups and a sports bottle. But wow, that was a memorable beach trip for sure. Even without the proper glassware I still found it more enjoyable than Pliny, even though I have had Pliny on tap a couple times before. If the beer is good enough, I'll enjoy it no matter the container. I try to use the right glassware if I can, but it's nothing that's going to ruin the experience for me.

The best glassware for any beer is the human mandible, with a backwards motion by the tongue leading the liquid into the esophagus.

    Allow me to demonstrate: *slurp*

First thing I would do is get off BA and go to the store and pickup some beers you feel more comfortable drinking straight from the bottle or can.

The extra sediment won't ruin the beer. Heck you might even like the flavor more.

Time to teach those kids not to drink from random cups on tables.

Sounds like you're over thinking it a bit. I'm all for using proper glassware but if it's not really a feasible option then nothing wrong with chugging it straight from the bottle. How many times do us beer 'enthusiast' carefully pour a bottle conditioned beer into a glass, only to gulp the last 1/3 (or so) with sediment straight from the bottle? So honestly, what's the difference? Drink away my friend as it's more important to enjoy your beer with friends and family than worry about what fellow internet beer drinkers have to say (yes, I realize the irony ). The ambiance of the setting and company will offset any possible flavors sense loss you may miss from a glass.
