I need suggestions for good cellarables in the $10 or less per bottle range as I am on a tight budget until my wife finds a job (three rejections this week alone.) I have the space and the cellar itself is nice and cool (about 55F). Obviously whalez like Darkness and Dark Lord are out of the question. And since I'm in MN, the Pliny's and Heady Topper are also out.

Try things like Sierra Nevada Bigfoot , Stone Russian imperial stout, Brooklyn black chocolate stout Founders imperial stout not sure if there all distributed in your area but all fairly cheap and a nice way to see how the beers change over time .

You don't want to cellar Pliny or Heady anyway

If she gets a job by Oct go to Darkness Day and then trade some of those. Also Abrasive will be highly tradeable.

Check out Schell's...I cellared a 6-pack of their 2012 Snowstorm 2012 and it turned out nicely.

Good suggestions all. Not sure if the Brooklyn is available here, but the rest should be.

Doh! I knew better than that. I was trying to get across the idea of something that is only available locally, like Heady or in a small region like Pliny. We in the upper midwest don't get many of the releases from the smaller coastal breweries like Russian River, the Alchemist, or Allagash.

    Bigfoot
    Narwhal
I missed the oliva quad but am sure that had some potential

    North coast
    Old Rasputin
    Old stock ale

I also seek out Barleywines in the sub $10 range (they can be found)

Some of the offerings from Weyerbacher I think would age well. You can get 4 packs of their stuff easily in PA. I hear that Insanity ages well.

Not to sound like a dick but cellaring beer would be the last of my worries if I had a tight budget while my wife was without work.

You're probably right. I do tend to be a little solopsistic, so I probably should back off.

Try to stay away from the bombers. You are paying for expensive packaging. Stay with the regular 330-355ml bottles as the bottle and equipment to bottle are effectively priced due to scale of economics.

Like other said stay with stouts and such like Narwhal and ABT12 in the small bottles. We get Roch10's 330ml bottle for $3.60/ea in season!

Besides many will say the smaller bottles will age at a quicker pace then the bombers.

    Enjoy

Forget the $10-bottle range, get something that comes in a 4 or 6 pack for about that price - Expedition Stout, G.I. Belgians if you can find them (Matilda or Pere Jacques) Sierra Nevada Narwhal and Bigfoot... I basically just listed all of what's in my cellar.

If you are looking for bombers Clown Shoes makes some good cellarable beers for around $10

I agree that the $10 for a 4/6 pack is a good idea but the GI sisters hardly fit that description. They are over $20 a bottle here in CT
