I don't think so. I didn't try to order one, in any event. I had their Helles, which was fantastic; and I tried to order the Zwickel, but they were out on that day. I also had Andechs Vollbier and Reissdorf Kolsch.

I'm hoping we can get back soon enough, I really enjoyed it. I'll get the hefeweizen if they have it.

The Helles and Zwickel are both excellent. But IMO the Weizens are where they really shine. Have one with a couple of Weisswurst and a pretzel and you'll be transported straight to Oberbayern.

good to see this in a recommendation as I will be experiencing this brew for the first time later on today after I review a higher ABV brew. Cheers!

This thread must be good luck. Shortly after I made my first reply I was gifted with two 12oz bottles of Paulaner!

I saw a dude on fb say his fav hefe is Widmer. So that counts as a hefe now, and not simply a wheat (weiz)?

As you can see from my BA name, I like Hefes. Weihenstephener is the best IMHO. Many other good offerings such as Franziskaner and Paulaner. BUT - although it doesn't get much love here, I'm still a fan of Erdinger. It's kind of like the Budweiser of hefeweizens but sometimes it's just the right beer and hits the spot.

    Michael,

I hope that you get to try the Zwickel soon; it is indeed a very tasty beer! I had a chance to drink a pint at Brauhaus Schmitz in Philly not that long ago. Below is what I posted about it in the Germany forum:

Beer No. 2: Traunstein 1612er Zwickel

I do enjoy a good Zwickel and this one was very, very tasty. A nice hazy yellow color with a wonderful balance of malt and hops (with some yeasty notes). This beer is right up there with Urban Chestnut Zwickel.

    Cheers!

    Jack

The 6 pack calls it a hefeweizen on the label

The best Hefe is Franziskaner or my name isn't...oh wait.
Another one I have yet to see mentioned is Konig Ludwig Weissbier. I need to pick that one up again.

I only had Widmer once, on tap, at a Buffalo Wild Wings. I thought it tasted terrible. I might give it another shot, though.

Schofferhofer Kristallweizen is what I bring home every time I go to Germany. Never seen it in the states and as far as I can Google it isn't distributed here. There hefeweizen is quite solid also.

No, it is not. It is an American Wheat. (anger directed at Widmer. Not you.)

They've been stubborn and insisted with the incorrect label for many years. It is an American Wheat, not a traditional Hefe-Weizen.

Hefe was one of the styles I cut my teeth on when I was first getting into craft beer. As others have noted, the standard bearer is Weihenstephaner, but I was surprisingly impressed by Tucher as well, just to name one that hasn't gotten as much attention on this thread. Paulaner is another one that sticks out in my mind for German-based hefes.

In terms of American takes, everyone clearly knows about Kellerweis, but I have to mention a new brew out of Portland that I had last week that I thought was pretty fantastic: Laurelweizen by Laurelwood Public House. Their distro is pretty limited, but you can find their beers online pretty easily. That one is definitely worth a grab for hefeweizen lovers.
