Finally a trub vs no trub experiment !

    Low trub: 0.1 oz (essentially nothing)
    Moderate trub: 1.13 oz (probably close to what homebrewers who care can achieve)
    High trub: 10.56 oz (quite a bit)

    They found the wort with the most trub produced a beer with significantly lower levels of the aforementioned ester compounds.

    What am I missing here? Looks like there are less ester compounds in the low trub but in the next sentence he says the exact opposite...

    I went back and read that paragraph .. I dont see at all what you are talking about....

    "They found the wort with the most trub produced a beer with significantly lower levels of the aforementioned ester compounds. Huh?! We’re talking 106 times more trub than the beer in the low trub condition, equivalent to nearly 3/4 lb of kettle sludge in a 5 gallon batch. With all of my skepticism, not even I expected this. Fascinating."

    Those numbers seem to imply Low Trub=almost no ester compounds. High Trub=more ester compounds. So I'm just not understanding the sentence "They found the wort with the most trub produced a beer with significantly lower levels of the aforementioned ester compounds." when it seems like the numbers say the opposite. I think there's just some part I'm missing here, not sure what...

    Looks to me like the comments in parentheses are giving a verbal of the amount of trub, not the amount of esters in each category.

    Very cool, I'm one of those lazy brewers, I just dump the whole kettle in the fermentor and go about my business. Now I guess I have been doing something right for a change.

    I wonder if my overpitching habits help reduce the esters in my beer to the same degree that leaving trub out would otherwise. :slight_smile:

    I know I feel better about not getting all the break out of the kettle now .. good experiment.
