    Whalez, bro.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/food/ct-120-beer-xx-20140707,0,3122576.story

Just a few weeks after debuting, Chicago's Moody Tongue Brewing is planning to release a beer made with rare black truffles that will cost as much as $120 per bottle. (Good news: it's a big bottle.)

Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner will be one of the most expensive beers ever sold in Chicago, and likely the priciest ever made in the city. Keeping with Moody Tongue's "culinary brewing" philosophy, the beer will be available primarily at beer-focused restaurants in 22-ounce bottles, but also in limited availability on draft and in some bottle shops.

Moody Tongue brewer and founder Jared Rouben said the beer should be available by the end of July. Restaurants where he has previously said he plans to sell beer include Longman & Eagle, Dusek's, GT Fish & Oyster, Nightwood and The Publican.

Beers with price tags beyond $100 are rare, and often a combination of massive alcohol (Samuel Adams' Utopias approaches 30 percent) and gimmick (BrewDog's The End of History was packaged inside a dead squirrel).

Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner is wholly different: a 5 percent lager made with a rare, expensive Australian ingredient that is intended to be paired with food. Though availability will be limited — Moody Tongue made 40 barrels, the equivalent of 80 kegs — Shaved Black Truffle Pilsner will speak to whether the booming craft beer industry has matured enough for consumers to spend $120 on a bottle of beer with a fine meal.

    -----

"How do we get our new brewery the press and attention we need? . .. "" "Hmm"" ""How about we just throw the most expensive ingredient our little brains could think of in it and then charge an outrageous price. That will get people talking"" "Yea!!"

I've seen this in other booming industries. Right when everybody tries to make THE BIGGEST THING EVAR SEEN IN MANKIND, is when all hope goes out the window.

But, hey enough talk...... WHO is gonna release the first $500 beer?? I can't wait!!! lol

I think this qualifies 100% for a "gimmick" tag.

That bs above is laughable. Anybody that spends $120 on any beer, let alone a five percent Pilsner, is an idiot and far from "mature".

If I really want black truffle in a beer (and I don't) I will add some truffle oil or truffle salt to a beer. Soo not worth $120!... that's just crazy talk.

Hmmm...making blanket statements about the intelligence of people who spend a certain amount money on a product that is already a luxury item. Really showing off your own intelligence and "maturity" there.

P.S.: The above comment is in no way an endorsement of the black truffle beer, as this does not sound like my cup of tea at all.

Settle down, the internet and hyperbole go hand in hand. But I would question anyone's maturity, and sanity, if they paid that for a beer.

I do want to try it though...

If anyone works at an investment bank and wants a new, completely unqualified employee with a potentially alarming beer-drinking habit, I'm available!

Did anyone partake in any of the goose island clybourn farmers market series while Jared was there? Those beers kicked ass. While its clearly a gimmick, the guy does know how to utilize fresh fruit/veggies/spices in beers.

And who would pay that much for a bottle of beer....the rich guys that dine at that restaurant Per Se that it was created for. A tasting menu at Per Se is almost 300 bucks. I imagine folks eating there can wave their dollar d*cks and drink a bottle of truffle beer instead of the 200 dollar bottle of a vintage pinot or somethin.

Well... Can't say my excitement for this place opening in Pilsen hasn't diminished a bit. They are clearly not focused on making beer for me or most normal beer nerds.

Instead you can find me around the way at Lagunitas with my $120 enjoying 87 pours of their four ounce tasters.

Starting a brewery with this beer as your first release probably ends one of two ways, an overhyped under delivering product from a brand with no reputation that fails to sell well or an expensive product only targeted towards a narrow demographic that sells moderately well to people who will not embrace your brand or tout your beer.

After the former happens you become known as "Ohhh you mean that mushroom beer company?." I find it hard to picture them selling 80 kegs worth of bottles at anywhere near this price point. As best as I understand the success rate of cellaring pilsners, this probably won't end up being terribly collectible either.

    From TFA:
So, if this hits shelves, it'll probably be somewhere in the $40 range. Still pricey, but not three-figures pricey.
