My birthday's coming up on August 8th and I'm trying to plan a belgian themed beer party to go with it.
So far I'm thinking of getting:

    La Chouffe
    McChouffe
    Kaizer Blauw
    Kaizer Rod
    Trappistes Rochefort 10
    gouden carolus classic/tripel

And if they have any christmas-time stuff leftover, like carolus noel or stuff like that, obviously I'd grab those as well. Any other suggestions on stuff to consider? I typically like belgian strong darks and pales, quads and tripels, and I like stuff on the sweeter and stronger side. Thanks very much for any input.

Chimay Grand reserve is a nice choice, delirium is a superb belgian strong ale, ST.Bernadus quadruple is excellent as well. La Chouffe is probably my favorite belgian ale, might also be fun to do a belgian/ Belgian style american showdown. you could pick up some Pranqster and ommegang three philosophers.

I like the showdown idea, but extend it to 'North American' and add some Unibroue, like Trois Pistoles.

Sounds fun! I'd be on the floor pretty quickly. Gulden Draak is, in my opinion, a great but relatively available belgian dark ale. I also agree that Orval is a good change of pace.

You gotta try it, then, it can definitely hang with the big boys. It's definitely in NY, maybe even in 12 oz bottles if you find the right store.

    Westmalle

These are the ones I return to when I need a reminder of what beer should taste like

They are pricey and I dont indulge with them often but I have at least one in my fridge in case I need it...plus rochefort 10, gouden carolus tripel

I more or less had a Belgian beer themed birthday last year. It was awesome but I barely remember leaving the last bar we went to, not long after I no longer had any dinner in my stomach and the next day I had a hangover from hell....all in all it was an awesome night

Thanks for the awesome suggestions. I've tried Abt 12, and as much as everyone loves it, I just don't like it at all. I know that sounds blasphemous, but there it is. I think Rochefort 10 is the benchmark quadrupel for me, and Abt 12 couldn't even sweep the floor at the Saint Remy monastery.

As for Westy 12, I WISH. Unfortunately, that's off the table as I would literally have no way of getting it (as far as I know).

Amazing suggestions here. To add my votes:
    St. Bernardus Quad
    Gulden Draak Quad
    Karmeleit
    Orval
and if you go N. America at all, listen to TongoRad and get some Unibroue Trois Pistoles.

I dont even RSVP to parties anymore unless they have westy served out of the legit wooden crate made by the monks.

I would have the full slate of Rochefort brews, and for variety, a good wit (st. Bernardus?), maybe a saison DuPont, an easily available sour like boon gueuze, or something from hanssens. Add those to your original list, make a big pot of mussels, Belgian chocolates, cheese and breads, happy birthday.

Oh and tons of frites with herbed mayo.

Have some Ommegang, they specialize in Belgium styles. They are one of my favorite brewers. They are not made in Belgium and are from Cooperstown NY. They pretty much only do Belgian styles and make every type just about and each one of their offerings is A+.
