Whenever I go out to eat or drink, I usually order draft beer since it's something I can't have at home. And my preference is for IPAs. But those infrequent times when I do order a bottle of an IPA, I ask for it to be brought to the table unopened. If I'm going to pay a premium for something I want to make sure it's fresh. Besides, it makes me feel like a beer connoisseur. Most of the time, the bottle is brought and handed to me. Last week at an upscale burger restaurant in NYC, I ordered a bottle and when the waiter brought it to the table, he has his thumb under the date and showed it to me for my approval, just like a wine drinker would be offered a taste. Needless to say, I was impressed. So, if you order a bottle of an IPA in a bar or restaurant and want to contribute to elevating the appreciation of beer, ask for it to be brought to the table unopened.

I rarely order bottled beer, and when I do, it's usually not IPA - but good call!

Curious - which burger restaurant and what beer?

I envy you your understanding atmosphere. If I insisted on seeing the date on a bottle before committing to pay, I'd probably get roped up behind some truck with a 'git-r-done' decal on the back window and dragged a few miles.

Never thought to ask to see the bottle first, great idea!

I could understand doing this at a more beer oriented restaurant or bar, but I'd feel weird asking to see a bottle of SNPA at Chilis.

Nothing worse than watching a waiter pour your beer into a glass incorrectly and it's 50%+ head.

I had a waiter at a VERY expensive NYC restaurant pour me a beer incorrectly and was proud of himself that the head didn't flow over the glass edge.

I usually stick with what's on draught. Bottled beer can sit in coolers for extended periods of time. When I do order a bottled beer it typically isn't an IPA, for that reason.

I always thought at resteraunts it is not legal to serve unopened bottles of beer, especially for resteraunts that do not have take out licences.

A restaurant can present the unopened bottle at the table, but the waiter will need to open it.

Will definitely give this a shot. I was at a Melting Pot a few months ago and had a Ruination that was 2 months past it's suggested prime.

So would I. But then again, I don't go to Chili's for beer.

And oh yeah, I left out the part about how he started to pour and then said - you probably would prefer to pour it yourself. Impressed a second time I was.

I never pay premium prices for a bottled beer I can drink in the comfort of my easy chair at home. Dining out means draft only for me.

Bottled beer in the 750ml,375ml and 22 oz format are becoming very "in style" at some restaurants ,many buy and cellar variants and vintages and i think that will continue to grow in the future i like going to go to a restaurant and see a superb cellar list just as wine geeks like to see a list

That is awesome. I'd give that waiter over 20% tip for being up to speed! :-)

I think for the most part where I go out to eat the IPA choices are seasonal on the menu so I would assume the places don't buy enough to carry over stock to the following year.

But its a good idea and probably something I will start doing.

Or watching him dump the dredges in because he doesn't want you to waste a drop.

I was the very last person at a beer tasting once featuring a local nano-brewery that didn't filter any of their beers. All were poured from bottles. The server was so proud because every time he got to me there was exactly one pour left. So what did he do, every time? Dumped the bottle upside down, pouring 1+ ounces of sediment into my glass along with the beer. We have some pics of my gf's glass alongside mine- hers are crystal clear, mine are cloudy. In one of the styles, it worked, but it just about ruined a few of them. I think I should have said something, but I didn't want to be that pretentious asshole.

OK- which one of you guys was the waiter?

That kind of service is way beyond what I'd expect, and just had to come from somebody who is a fellow beer enthusiast. Way to go- I guess you never know what you can get until you ask for it.
