My buddy just messaged me from Anchorage asking if $22.99 was a good price for Darkness. He said they also had Pentagram and Smoke. The store says they expect regular shipments now. Makes me even madder at Schott Distributing in Rochester as Darkness is $2-$3 more here than in fricken Alaska. He ended picking up 2 Darkness.
I know it's not Midwest but since it's Surly I figured it fit in here well enough.

I call shenanigans. I don't doubt that your buddy found it there, but I'm sure it wasn't there legally. It's just kind of like how you can occasionally find Spotted Cow in Minnesota. Someone has to be muling it to the store, and that violates a number of laws.

    Mule for a loss though?

Maybe it's the store owner or an employee of the store, and they'd be making the trip to Minnesota anyway. From what I've heard that is usually the case with Spotted Cow mules. You could always email Surly to get a direct answer about the situation. I'm sure they'd like to know that someone in Alaska is selling their beer.

What kind of distribution laws does Alaska have? Once in DC at the Brickskeller a bartender told me that they could sell whatever they wanted. For example, a DC bar owner could drive to Wisconsin and buy a truckload of Spotted Cow kegs and bring it back to DC to sell in his/her establishment without any repercussions. I have no idea if this is true or not. But maybe Alaska has loose laws in this regard?

Gold Rush Liquors is the store in case people have friends up that way and want to let them know.

That is absolutely true in DC, but I am not sure about Alaska. Possible though.

There is a bar in Seattle that touts their Minnesota Style pizza. Think Delano's. Their menu shows Grain Belt Premium as a beer selection. I'm pretty sure Schells doesn't distribute to Washington state. What does this have to do with the subject? Not sure, perhaps I'm trying to say that some states may be able to get away with this stuff legally. Also, I think it's hilarious that you can get "Mn Style" pizza in Seattle. I didn't even know we had a pizza style, but I'm extremely proud of it and will defend it to the end lol.

Places in anchorage get a lot of limited distro/brewery only releases on the shelves. They are usually leftovers from beer festivals

Zayda Buddy's -a friend of mine transplanted from Milwaukee swears by it- and they are very-nearly infamous for bringing beers in that are not licensed for their state. Oh well, what's a few laws between friends and gourmands?

I lived in Alaska. Things are loose there. Nobody's going to bother a store for something like selling Surly.

Maybe everyone shouldnt post publicly about things like this...

Why do you think love child #4 is now $19 everywhere? (maybe because there were multiple threads saying "man this pricing mistake is awesome!")

On the HeadFi forums its considered extremely bad etiquette to publicly post when audio companies list '$20 tupperware' on a customs declaration when its actually a $500 music player. Lots of other countries have 20%+ VAT that most would like to avoid. THis is a slightly different situation, but the idea is the same...sometimes secrets are good.

Also a former WI resident residing in Seattle. Zayda Buddy's is a decent spot. I'd say that place is more a WI bar than anything else. They are the only place in Seattle I know of that will play Badger Hockey games regularly. The deep fried WI cheese curds are a bit of a let down though. You can typically get Oberon & Two Hearted bottles there - but for like $6 a bottle.

The surly is left over from the culmination beer festival in May. It is extremely limited and is a one time deal. It went on the shelf last week and is probably gone by now. If your buddy knew what he was looking for, he could have picked you up some amazing brews.

All fine and dandy as long as you don't get pulled over before you get back to DC. Depending on the state, it's illegal for non-licensed distributors to transport more than a small amount into (or through) their jurisdiction. That said, seems like you see a little of everything in certain bottleshops in DC. Must not be too risky.

Ever been to Dulono's on lake St? Thin crust, sauce a bit on the sweet side and lots of it, tons of cheese, and cut into squares. That's the impression I get from Zayda Buddies website. Now I wouldn't go so far as to say Mn actually has any claim to this style of pizza, but I've never had pizza quite like it outside of Mn and Wisc. I think the bar owner sort of made up the whole Mn Pizza thing, which is fine by me. Nothing really exists until someone makes it up lol.
