Finally back for round two! This time, we hit up a little-known spot called Bandwagon Brewpub. Every beer in this flight had to be added to BA (as did 2 of the Ithaca brews, incidentally).

OK, from right to left, this time:

Pilsen Schmilsen Pilsner. OK, first off, this is not a Pilsner. Once you get past that, it's quite tasty. It's hazy and cloudy, a little citrusy. Yes, it has Pilsner malts; so does Hop Ranch (not exactly a Pilsner). If you're rating specifically to style, I can't see it as being very good. If you're rating to taste...that's another story. 4.0
Ezra Red Ale American Amber. This was a completely inoffensive - and unimpressive - red ale. It wasn't hoppy; good! It had a slightly sour, overripe fruit note; not good! 3.25
Rauchbier. Now this...this is an excellent, easy-drinking Rauchbier. Perhaps the most approachable smoked beer I've ever had, without compromising the core flavor. Bacon on the back-end? Check. Smooth and malty up forward? Check. I loved it. 4.0
Robust Brown Ale. This had some very nice porter-like qualities, with a solid roast malt, as well as thick, smooth caramel and toffee flavors. I really liked this presentation. 4.0
Doc Rocker Porter. Better than Ithaca's oatmeal stout, but ultimately underwhelming. Disappointing in the other direction, though: nice roasted notes, but no balance, and the same overripe fruit sourness. Not at all bad, by the way; just not as solid as I felt it could have been. 3.75

Overall, this was a solid little brewpub that you've likely never heard of unless you're a local. The food was excellent, as well. Worth a visit if you're in Ithaca.

OK, and finally, finally, I've got two new beers for you from this Sunday. Since I enjoyed these at @utopiajane's before setting out for Syracuse, it's only appropriate that this post be christened New Share Sunday.

First up: Ithaca Green Trail "Easy-Drinking IPA."

Easy-Drinking IPA? 6%? So it's not a session IPA, then. What is it? I'm going Belgian/White IPA (listed as a standard American IPA). There was a definite yeast profile, with a hint of banana, and a dry spiciness, as well. Hop profile was mostly citrus-based.

Nothing excellent, but I wouldn't mind drinking that out on the deck, a la Fresh Slice (although not as good).

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/651/114231/?ba=Roguer
    3.58 / -0.3%

Then, it was time for the big guns: could Hill Farmstead Abner Double Pale Ale possibly live up to the hype?

    Jeez, where do I begin?

Let's start with the mouthfeel, as that seems to be HF's calling card (to me). Creamy, smooth, delicate, soft, relaxed; yet somehow, still lively and awake.

Aroma? Classic modern DIPA: lots of citrus, a little tropical, soft biscuit and bread malt notes, and just a hint of peppery spice.

Taste? Far more tropical than the nose implied, with big notes of mango and just...just so much juice. Some citrus peel and pine resin on the back end give it a long, sticky, semi-dry finish.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22511/58299/?ba=Roguer
    4.53 / -2.4%

So, I guess in answer to my previous question, I guess technically no, it didn't live up to they hype; I clocked in at -2.4% rDev! That said, I rated it at a 4.53; it's damned delicious! It's tough to improve when the ratings are 4.50 to 4.75 across the board. Nothing - and I mean nothing - about this beer was anything less than superb.

So, a great New Beer Weekend comes to a close. What a great time. Thank you Maria for showing me around your town!

Good evening BAs! Not much I can say since I was sober and neglected to put the chip in my camera,so no photo.

Anyway, this was Oddsides' Pineapple Ale. I love pineapple and this smelled like a winner. It wasn't. It was one of the worst tasting beers I've ever had. No further comment.

    New Smoked Beer Sunday
    [IMG]
I was lucky enough to attend a FFF/Market Garden pairing dinner this past week. They were selling bottles of this afterwards so I had to pick one up. Strangely I had not previously seen it in Ohio before even though we get New Belgium now and see FFF from time to time. Only having one of the Smoked Beer style before, I managed to save it for today.

Overall it's decent but not great. I like the smoke and cocoa notes but it's rather empty on the mid-palate which kind of leaves a hole. Still good to try.

Edit: If you look closely to the right of the middle of the bottle you can see my cat Chloe making a cameo

I like how you brought out the balance on this beer. It's almost as if Evil Twin can do no harm.

Hey all! Chiming in after a couple weeks off with a nice beer I picked up last weekend in Florida. Hot and humid here, so I was craving something light and refreshing. Bells Oberon Ale was looking at me from the door of my fridge. It is a solid pale wheat, and great to see in the 16 oz can format. I wish Bells distributed here, as Two Hearted (also now in cans) is one of my favorite IPAs. Oh well, I enjoyed the Oberon, some nice hoppiness added to the wheat base. Not the best I've had, but I'd drink it again in a pinch. Nerdy review below:

Good evening NBS viewers! I hope all are enjoying themselves. Today was full of some nice weather. Here is what I have tried out this evening:

Good Munich dunkel, very pleasant. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, light roast with a fair amount of raisin/pale fruits and a touch of herbal hops. Extremely clean and well balanced, but there are definitely bolder Dunkels out there I've had. Crisp and smooth. Enjoyable. 82/100
    [IMG]

Really good American pale ale. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine with a moderate amount of light caramel and lightly toasted bready malt sweetness. Good balance of bitterness with a crisp and slightly sticky mouthfeel. Very drinkable. Really enjoyed this but it did not bestow too much awe in me :stuck_out_tongue:. 86/100
    [IMG]

Really nice hopped up Belgian Pale ale. 100% cascade. Aromas could have stood to be bolder, but were pleasant and balanced. Taste of pineapple, tangerine, lemon, grapefruit, pear, apple, black pepper, floral, grass, pine, candi sugar, bread, and floral/yeast earthiness. Nice moderate peppery yeast/hop bitterness on the finish. Very well balanced between yeast, hop, and pale malt flavors. Very crisp, smooth, and lightly sticky mouthfeel. Very enjoyable. 88/100

Cheers and enjoy the rest of this great Sunday!

Rain delay in the Yankees game so on to new beer #2. North Coast Brother Theolonious.

Yeah, a widely accessible beer I've never tried, mostly due to the fact that it's a style I don't seek out frequently, but the price point and cool bottle art forced me to pick one up the other day. It is brewed very much to style, dark murky appearance, with a pleasant aroma of dark fruits, classic Belgian yeast, and some spices. The taste follows, but surprisingly little alcohol given the high ABV. Overall? I'd give it a 3.75. No Rochefort or Chimay, but this is a very well done beer, and the price makes it even better. Definitely worth a try.

    Cheers once more!

    NEW GOSE SUNDAY

    Greetings fellow NBSers,

True to my word, now that I’m off work it is time for a new beer. It’s cooled off considerably here in the Lilac City, all the way down to 93 degrees. I had it all lined up at work – I was going to be sitting on my ass in a comparatively shady spot with an air conditioner that could be described as mediocre. But one of my co-workers had injured her foot and it was her day to be stuck with tasks that involved walking around in the 103 degree heat. Sadly, I’m not as good at being an A-hole as some might think, so I let her talk me into swapping jobs.

Feeling like I got off work at a steel mill or some sort of blast furnace, I came home to a can of Anderson Valley’s attempt at a Gose:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/193/99790/?ba=woemad

I have no idea how authentic this beer was in terms of style. It wasn’t cloudy like in the description here, just a little hazy. While crisp and tart, there wasn’t a whole lot else going on in terms of flavor. Seemed like a super-dry lemonade was crossed with a one-dimensional Belgian witbier. I might try another Gose sometime, preferably one from der Fatherland and from a brewery that specializes in them, but for now I'll continue to prefer authentic German pilseners over this.

Hey! Thanks for not being the asshole co-worker! Nobody likes that guy.

I liked this beer a bit better than you seemed to, but I'm not overly familiar with "authentic" versions of the style. My biggest problem was the name; I get that AV plays up their local "dialect", and it's often fun. But, this is, easily, the worst named beer ever.

Hey NBS'ers, I've been on the site for a while, but managed to be completely oblivious to this thread until last week. Beer, food, music, what's not to love?

I've seen this brewery/beer on tap before but never tried it, then saw the bottle at only one of the 18 beer outlets where I obsessively know the inventory, so I thought it a happy fluke. Heathen Brewing's Son of Malice.

Better than I expected, considering I haven't heard much of anything about this brewery. Gave it a 3.75 for the good aroma and for not going overboard on the caramelly malts.

No music to share right now, as we're finishing up an old favorite movie, Hot Fuzz.

    Cheers!

Another glorious day in paradise... this week has been uncharacteristically hot for this little slice of the greatest place on Earth, with temperatures threatening the 90s. Been busy as all hell working three and a half jobs six and a half days a week, but when one and the half involve appreciating views such as these:
    [IMG] [IMG]
It's hard to complain too much, and makes the physical labour side of things a little more manageable (especially when I get to come home to this adorable face each evening:

Tweaked my ankle once again at basketball, so I suppose having a bomber of 11% waiting for me worked out doubly in my favour. Ladders all day tomorrow are sure going to be fun, though!

The beer itself: Undead Party Crasher, née Vampire Slayer, is a solid hoppy/dry stout, that certainly lives up to its ashy billing. I had extremely high hopes for this, though I fear they may have been unrealistic. What it is is a solid if not as spectactular as I was hoping triumphantly dark exploration of ash, light smoke, and definitive alcohol bite, all accentuated by a bitter hoppiness that can divide the masses when it comes to a big stout like this. Reading the other reviews, it seemed odd that the alcohol stood out as strongly as it did to me, as most other BAs seemed to praise its subdued nature and hiding of the booze-a-hol, but it was distracting in my experience. As I still have not completely flushed out the whole aging thing, my novice mind wonders if this is the sort of 'shortcoming' that may benefit from some time in the dark and unperturbed-ness of my 'cellar' (aka the spot in the corner under my shelves/loft that seems to have a good balance of dark/temperate). Who knows. I'm glad to have tried it, but having had it sitting and waiting for me for over a month at this point (and as such, having the legend grow in my ignorant mind), it was unable to live up to the expectations I had built for it.
    Cheers!
