    Ok, but what is right?

Doesn't he say the Ankel Keut thing is wild speculation? It's basically a joke, and the article was pretty clear about that.

My explanation of the meaning of AK - and my weird emotional attachment to it - is long and, frankly, a bit dull. I won't repeat it here. If you're tediuim-immune, you can find the answers in one of my vanity volumes. Sweet! I think it's called.

    Tom,

Below is what Ron posted in the other thread as his top 3 IPAs:

    "Easy:

    Bass
    Allsopp
    Salt"

    Cheers!

Thanks Jack! I'm spotting a few consistencies here in the two lists.

Ron / patto1ro posts threads like this every once in a while. I'm sure he's fully aware that this thread won't grow at the rate of a "What's your favorite IPA from 2014?" thread, and I suspect that's one reason why he does it. If you or I were historians in a sea of "know-it-alls" that actually had no clue what beer culture was like before Stone and beyond the States, we might be tempted to put a few spanners in the works too.

Edit: Possibly off-putting or sardonic to some, I still enjoy the subject matter.

Nor do I. Not sure if I'm just reading this wrong from a long day, but given that there is little clarification, and him knocking down other people's informative articles, seems to me to be more of an "I know something about beer that you don't know, nany nany boo boo"

What subject matter? He posted three words then pretty much shut down conversation with his answers to any questions posted. Unless the subject matter is poking fun at IPA threads, in which case it isn't very witty either.

I think the point is that there are whole universes of beer out there that get little to no attention on sites like this -- sites that, moreover, purport to be the standard bearers and de facto holders of definitive lists such as the Top 250 Beers of the World (used to read "Universe"). Every now and again it might be a good thing to remind people of this lest they get too caught up in their own sense of importance.

I love how uptight this place is at times

    Beer styles, serious business.

Also the mental image of steam pouring out of Ron's ears while reading another post on extended boils in scottish beers is equally amusing

The point was abundantly clear. When you make a point that way, what you are actually doing is trying to make yourself seem big by making others feel small. Most of the people responding to the thread understood right away that it was poking fun at the top three IPA threads that everyone is a little sick of. But a bunch of us were good natured about it and tried to turn it into a thread about AKs. The OP resisted every attempt. If he had a point, he would have taken the opportunity to give a rare style some attention, but the best he could do is tell me to go read his blog. He didn't even provide a link to his blog. Why would I read his blog if he can't even answer questions on his own thread?

    No you have not AlienSwineFlu

Not until you have tried my imperial, kiwi and coriander infused stout mild AK 'murican IPA with a hint of mint chocolate infused robust bitter porter.

Then, and only then, you have reached the summit.

Or perhaps you are trying to simply point out (in a slightly underhanded way) that the world's great brewing nations and their myriad traditions are, in fact, very big -- especially when compared to the current taste maker demographic that wants to infuse U.S. "craft" level intensity of flavor into every style across the globe. Sometimes the best thing you can communicate to people mired in one mindset is that they need to get out, research, travel, and explore for themselves as much of what these great traditions have to offer as possible.

I don't presume to speak for him. What I do know from his research, writing, and travel is that he has accomplished drinking the world's great beers and experiencing its traditions and cultures at the source. As for anyone who hasn't, I, personally, would highly recommend doing so -- even if it may mean following in the footsteps of someone more experienced in such things than yourself. In my opinion it's extremely rewarding.

EDIT: But enough about this. I want to learn more about AKs if possible.
