I know Sam Adams can get a lot of hate, sometimes rightly so, but Boston Lager is just an absolutely fantastic beer. I had it on tap the other night for the first time in months and it was just delicious. Sorry for the random post I just felt the need to share.

I only drink Sam Adams Boston Lager for 2 reasons:

1.The restaurant only carries BMC, Blue Moon and Boston Lager. It's a no-brainer here.
2.It comes in the Sam Adam's seasonal mixer I've bought.

Either way, I always enjoy the beer. I checked back and see that I rated it a 4.25 out of 5.

About the hate...Just last weekend my Brother in Law who is a Coors Light drinker said that Boston Lager is "Too Hoppy" for him and made a bitter beer face while saying it. He did say that the next beer he was looking forward to trying was Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy, but it's hard to give up the Coors light.

I too enjoy Boston Lager quite a bit. It's nice to know that I can rely on Sam Adama in the random pockets of craft beer deserts that exist in New England.

I am working my way through a sixer of Boston Lager as we speak. I agree that it is a fantastic beer, just enough hops, a touch of caramel malts and alot of drinkability. I could drink these all day long.

IMO Boston Lager is a tasty American Amber Lager beer.

The American Amber Lager beer style is not something I seek out frequently but I think that Boston Lager is a very good representation of this type of beer.

    Cheers!

I'll have to go the other way with this one. It's got an artificial taste synonymous with their Octoberfest. Not a favorite of mine at all. Their Noble Pils, however, is very good. And one of their only offerings I can drink more than one of.

There appears t be a tendency to dislike SA Boston Lager and lagers in general here on BA. Although, despite that, there are a number of lager lovers here as well. Like many others, when I was much younger than today, I drank AALs because that was what we had. My first experiences with SABL left me too thinking it was too bitter. Now, if I'm having a lager, it will probably be SABL (generally out of the Sam Can). While I've moved on in my taste preferences to other styles, I really appreciate the really varied flavors that craft beer now offer to us.

I'm with you OP, I think Boston Lager is a damn fine brew, perfectly balanced and very tasty. One of my favorite qualities of this beer is it's full flavor, yet sports an ABV on the low side (4.9%). Another awesome quality is that it's so damn ubiquitous you can find it in (to quote Providence) "craft beer deserts" with ease.

To me, it's the only beer that BBC has truly nailed, and it's one of two beers of theirs I go back to occasionally. The other is Cream Stout, which is surprisingly good and doesn't get as much recognition as it should. That being said, I haven't tried everything they make, but after a couple disgusting abominations (Cherry Wheat, Harvest Pumpkin) and lackluster brews (Rebel, Cold Snap, Whitewater IPA, Summer Ale) I just lost interest. I need to try Noble Pils but haven't found it in my area yet; it gets some press and respect here so it's probably not too bad.

Thornbridge Brewery makes a great Vienna Lager that smashes SA Boston Lager. It's hard to find, but there's a distributor in upstate NY that carries it. Wonderful representative of the style.

Boston Ale (an English Pale Ale) is another solid one, as is the Black Lager.

A +1 to @TongoRad suggestion about the Black Lager; I am a fan of the Black Lager.

To me, Sam Adams is easily forgotten because of how common it is to come across their beers. That said, I certainly agree with the OP that Boston Lager is an excellent beer. As a matter of fact I started and finished a 6pk this Friday afternoon before a concert.

Thanks, I'll see if I can find those. I haven't seen either in my normal hunting grounds... I may have to branch out a bit.

When BBC puts their mind to something other than cranking out gross fruit beers and weak wheats, they have a proven ability to make a very good brew. It's a shame that ability doesn't translate to their whole line-up.

    I think it's a malt bomb.

Yeah, those other beers you mention are apparently designed to appeal to a different segment of the market, but that doesn't mean that that's all they can do. There's definitely a handful of very reliable beers as well- Boston Lager, Boston Ale, Black Lager, Noble Pils, Cream Stout, maybe a few others like the Holiday Porter, etc.- that shouldn't be overlooked.
