Does anyone else (generally speaking) prefer English IPAs to American IPAs? I find them to be mellower, hoppy without being mouth-twisting. Some of my favorites include

    King Neptune
    Samuel Smith's IPA
    Shipyard IPA

    What are yours?

Fuller's Bengal Lancer is the best one I've had, hands down.

Southampton Burton IPA is also very nice.

I'm maybe not experienced enough yet to have a top three, and I'm not sure I prefer them over the Americans, but I do enjoy them. I'm starting to feel like every IPA going down the hatch is a bit too sweet. Everyone's trying to outdo each other, but sometimes subtlety is key.

I wouldn't say I prefer them either, but they do make for a nice change of pace every now and then.

It's a style that's definitely worth exploring for times like that.

I enjoyed a FFF Blackheart not too long ago on tap and would agree its a nice change of pace from your everyday hop assault

Haven't had many but I love Thorndbridge Jaipur (though honestly it drinks more like an American IPA) and people hate on it, but here in Asheville Green Man makes a very solid one as their flagship IPA.

Green Man IPA is really good if you can get a hold of some.

I had Woodstock In. 4000er IPA tonight. Seemed more English than American and I loved it. Knocked it off in 3 minutes. Shed IPA also works for me , as does Summit.

I was hooked on English IPA's after I had Left Hand's 400 pound monkey. I would love to try Samuel Smiths IPA I never realized they had one!

My 'home' brewery, Arcadia, brews beers "in the English tradition," and I broke into the craft beer scene by drinking their beers. When I first tried the IPA I thought it was a grapefruit bomb and I didn't like it. Now it seems so mellow in comparison, but I still like it.

Samuel Smith IPA really helped me get into hops back when I didn't like them. Sadly now I think my palate needs the big American hops so I don't really reach for it anymore, but I hear there are some English breweries doing good things with the newer American hop varieties.

I greatly prefer English to American IPAs. I love their more subtle hop flavor without the overwhelming bitterness (generally speaking, not always of course). My favorites:

    400 Pound Monkey
    Man Beer
    Fuller's

BBC Lost Sailor is a terrific beer and really flies under the radar, even to many of us here in Massachusetts.
I've had the pleasure of touring their brewery several times, and I always ask for a sample of the Lost Sailor on the tours.
