    Do you think its a possibility that the US will come to be number one in craft brews? Before you laugh off the idea, I'd like to share a few of my opinions and a few facts. First I would like to point out america's entrepreneurial spirit, which has literally changed the world, personally I have three friends who have made their own beers and would like to start there own breweries. Next our meteoric rise in small scare beer operations, this very idea would of been impossible not 10 years ago. I also would like to point out the sheer size and scope of america and its economy, nations that are above us in ratings like germany, england and belgium are not even the size of our largest states. Finally, the level of internal competition in america is always on the rise, if for no other reason then our massive talent pool to pull from, and things like state pride(sub nationalism is great for competition), I think that within the next 10 years, America will be the undisputed cutting edge of beer manufacturing. What are your thoughts on the subject?

    How do you define #1? Being "cutting edge?" I don't see why we wouldn't be considered #1 right now if that is the criteria considering the amount of experimentation that American breweries exhibit.

    There will always be things we do well and things others do well. Nothing more american than thinking we can overcome hundreds of years of tradition in 30 years.

    That being said I'm quite sure the kind of beer I like best is done best here.

    I do think we can overcome that sort of tradition, economically, when people want to, it can be done, look at feudal japans rise to power in one generation, going from nothing, to a military power house able to beat russia. In todays very small world tradition can be overcome much faster than in the past.

    Yes. America is the best country in the world. Go America.

    Germany, the UK and Belgium? Laughable little countries.

    Serious answer. I like beer from all countries. It's not a competition. And since the term "craft" came from America, and is a term I dislike, then sure, America is #1 in craft

    While I agree with the spirit of what your saying, its always a competition, its a market, there has to be a nation leading siad market, I think it will be america soon. But I also love beer from all over the world :slight_smile:

    By what metrics are you measuring this "leading" position?

    I'm from the UK. I live in America. I've visited Germany and Belgium.

    Right now there are beers and beer experiences that you can only get in each of the four countries, that cannot be replicated in another. Long may that continue. Variety is the spice of life etc.

    When it comes to beer, I have to disagree.

    However since you're pushing it - what exactly constitutes "leading"? I'm sure we all agree that this is not going to be "who makes the bestest of the best tasting beers", because that's subjective.

    I would have to say leading comes down to many factors, product of course being a major one, then sales being another massive factor and finally, i think the most exported would also be very important. While saying what product is best, would be difficult, because it is subjective as rollon pointed out, and plus bias will always factor. Leading sales and exports per capita would be a great measure though.

    In that case - if production, sales and exports (of non-BMC or that country's equivalent) are the measure, then perhaps USA is already the bestest. I have no idea.

    @jesskidden - any ideas here?

    I think in overall product sold we are, but that isn't really a fair measuring stick because we are so big, so we would have to set it per capita or relation to the population.

    Haha - so like Nibali on today's TDF stage - winning yellow isn't enough, you want to completely dominate the competition :grinning:

    There are breweries on there that I know are less than a year old. So it's not that old.
