I used to think of myself as a beer snob par excellence. But these days I realize I'm a beer geek. As a homebrewer I drink a beer and wonder, "how the hell did they get this flavor". The best part of being a homebrewer is flavor research. Lots and lots of flavor research!

Some people may not know why, but I'm pretty sure a number of folks do celebrate being an asshole. Not just with beer.

That's much more appropriate! Thanks! I definitely don't think of myself as an asshole, and I think most people I know would agree.

I agree and stand corrected. Revised: Welcome to the club of Beer Geeks! BeerAdvocates works for me as well.

The snob line has definitely not been crossed. Like you said, advocate is a much better word. I try to get people to explore, but don't criticize or act like a pushy ass

Well put. I also consider myself more the beer geek or the "craft nut" as my friends call me. Its all good, although I have created a "Craft ****" by turning a friend of mine onto good beer. Now he goes around forcefully declaring his allegiance to anything craft, sticking it in everyone's face, and poo pooing all those who disagree. Hell even I don't like sitting down for a pint with him anymore. So that would be my version of a beer snob. Sadly I am responsible for creating the monster.

No, you definitely haven't crossed it. You said you didn't like the beer, not "ew, why the hell would you drink that crap?"

Like @Todd said, that word gets misused a lot in this community. It's a semantic issue, but it's still an important one. Pointing out the difference and being aware of it helps to keep us all from crossing the line.

I prefer the term "beer geek" because, while I jokingly heckle my BMC drinking friends, I wholly support drinking what you like. With that being said, I do often find myself recommending entry-level craft to my BMC drinking companions. I have successfully converted my dad to witbiers and some BMC-friendly beers (Prima Pils, Sunshine Pils, Victory Lager, Eliot Ness, etc.)

I'll echo the sentiment that being a beer snob entails how you feel and act towards people that don't share the same passion for excellent craft beer as we do. As soon as you act/feel like you're superior to someone else based on the beer they like, you've just crossed that line out of beer geekery into beer snobbery.

Converting my dad to craft beer would be like converting the pope to Islam....can't be done hahaha

I sometimes think I have become a snob towards the beer! Not towards other beer drinkers...

I have gotten to where some days I open the fridge full of goodness, and I can't find one I want to drink!
    • had that
    • save that for when friends are here
    • that's too big
    • that's too light
    • only one of those left
    • had that yesterday...
Ugh. I wish sometimes I could go back to only drinking one kind of beer, when the choice was "Do I want a beer?" not "What beer do I want?"

    1st world problems, I suppose!

I wouldn't say I'm a snob. I like good beer. I like it local. I like discovering/trying it non local. I hunt and tick. I have my local go to beers. I buy what I like and/or find interesting. I choose my bars and hang outs based on beers they serve. I'm particular...in regards to what I buy and order MYSELF.

With others, I couldn't care less. My good friends? Sure, I introduce them to quality beers. I try to help expand their horizons. With some, I've succeeded. With others? They don't get it. No skin off my back. With acquaintances and new people? I drink whatever is offered at the establishment we're at. If they have a good beer, I order it and enjoy it. If my company asks about it, I tell. If not, I drink on. If they don't ask about it before they order their BMC, I let them drink on. It's not my place to tell them what to drink.

So basically: if I have access to any beer, I'm happy. If I have access to good beer, I'm happier. If I find myself in good company with those that also appreciate a good beer, I'm happiest. But in the end, I'm not pushing my tastes on anyone.

Someone told me I should have my "pinkies up" only because I was drinking from the glass, not the bottle.
