When I bought a bottle of RuinTen a few weeks ago, I noticed the Bottled On date was smeared. It didn't bother me because I knew it had just come out but I wondered "Are Stone, one of the biggest proponents of fresh beer, slacking on using the proper ink for their freshness dates?" I bought a bottle of Unapologetic IPA yesterday and same deal. Smeared and barely readable with a couple numbers completely missing. Several other reviewers have reported the same thing and that kind of makes it official. Has Stone switched to cheapo ink for their bottle stampers?

Sounds more like someone made some adjustments to the sensors, or to the stamper itself so the timing and/or the positioning is now off.

I am not sure if this is a common mistake but can see how there are problems. I work with consumable products that is code dated not only corrugated boxes but also poly bags. Trying to get these code dates not to smear or to print in the correct location is very often times frustrating and hard to read.

Every bomber that I saw yesterday of Unapologetic had a smeared date. With their emphasis on freshness, I'm sure their QA/QC Dept is aware and has already made the appropriate adjustments for future batches.

My RuinTen was smeared as well, I've written a polite, but firm letter to Stone

How did the beer taste? It's nice knowing that one is buying fresh product, but knowing those beers to be current releases, why obsess about the actual day, ink, etc?

R u going to do anything about the other 90 percent of brewers that either don't bottle date or use some fikakta drink by scheme? U really wrote a letter?

I usually have to find the actual Enjoy by date by bottle committee.

    I don't think I've ever seen a non-smeared best by date. They're always a puzzle.
Edit: Surly's dates on the bottom of the can are delicately handcrafted by min-wage earning art-school grads. The legibility of the best-by dates is the essential saving-grace of that otherwise superoverrated brewery.

Actually, I had a RuinTen last week that was a month and a half old. Maybe the stamper was off sync, or the employees at your Bottle Shop were commanded to smear it for faster purchase. I'm not sure on how old you like your DIPAs, I was just stating my bottle date. Just food for thought.

It's more of a problem this time of year for many breweries that date directly on the bottle/can due to humidity and condensation making it easy to rub the ink off.

Not worried about those beers but rather the regular lineup that they may or may not use the same machine for.

Ah. Never thought about that. But you would think the proper ink/stamping would prevent it from smearing no matter what because I buy beer that's been sitting in the fridge and leave it unrefrigerated long enough for it to condensate and the bottle dates remain intact
