There are endless threads on BA by those who defend Macros and say AALs are not so bad and that they have their place. Inevitably the responses come in about how bad these beers are and those who claim they would rather not drink beer at all than drink BMC.

What I don't see is any mention of price as a deciding factor in making beer purchases. The cheapest 6 pack of craft at my bottle shop is now about $ 9.00. If you are someone who likes to kill a 6 pack over the course of an evening then your minimum beer budget would be $ 63/ week. That amounts to $ 273/ month. If you drink a little bit more on weekends you could easily burn through $ 300/ month.

    If you are single and making decent money then $ 273- 300 may not seem unreasonable but as a family man with 2 kids, that is not a reality. Realistically I can't afford more than $ 40/ week which is still $ 173/ month so even this requires a trade off of some kind in the budget. So I had to find a way to spend less money on beer. My options really are 3;

    1. continue to drink craft but drink less
    2. get into homebrewing
    3. start drinking cheap beer
continue to drink craft but drink less: My budget would allow a case a week. 24 bottles spread out out over 7 days is less than 4 a day and if you drink more on weekends you might only have 2 bottles to ration out on weeknights. I have 2 beers as soon as I get home. That means no beer during a ball game, none if the neighbor stops over, none while jamming to some Blues. I go through 2 cases a week easily.

get into homebrewing: I have Parkinson's and cannot do anything that requires control of my hands. Plus the wife said 'No'.

    so that leaves:

start drinking cheap beer: If I want to go super cheap 30 packs of Genny are $ 14. A case of 'Gansett Tall boys is $ 20. Heck a 30 pack of Bud is $ 20.99. There are so many permutations that would allow you to put away a sixer each evening, a 12 pack over the course of a Saturday and still be able to drink a 6 pack of Craft on a Sunday afternoon and come in under $ 40 for the week.

IF I could I would drink Craft 7 days/ week but I can't afford it, so I make do. If BAs were honest they would all admit that they like the buzz they get when they drink beer. That buzz is the most important part of drinking beer. If you say otherwise then you probably say you buy Playboy magazine because you like to read the articles. Obviously we all want the best tasting beer we can buy but once you swallow the rest of the work is done by the alcohol, whether it is Heady Topper or Keystone Light. Drinking beer transports you to a happy place. A car transports you too. Whether you drive a KIA or a BMW you're still going to get where you want to go. The question is; can you afford the BMW?

Almost every post you make at minimum hints at a drinking problem.

I am sorry you cannot home brew. I was getting to where my limit of about 100 a month, meant I had to drink allot less beer.
Still for a long time there. the six packs prices for SN, SA and Brooklyn etc, were about 6 to 7. Its since shoot up to about 7 to 8, and with some as high as 9 to 11. So yea, Total wine sees me about every month. I buy my regulars I love and when I run out, I run out. I love good beer, but I can go days without it. I always loved good beer, but the USNAVY taught me I can live without news, beers, etc for months on end.

You best bet find a home brew and make friends I guess. I give lots of beer away to visitors.

If buzz is your object switch to cheap wine or liquor. I dig the buzz, but I do not set out to do it every time I drink beer.

If this is a problem for you, then beer in general is a problem for you. Sorry.

    Looks like the options are:

    1) Drink less
    2) Drink BMC
    3) Supplement your income*

*sadly, many of the quick ways to do this are illegal

Nothing wrong with Genesee Cream Ale (or esp. Bock)!

That's a ridiculous statement. If you think having 3 beers a day, and 4 on a weekend is a problem, you have a fundamental misconception about beer.

Buy cheep beer by the case. A case of Genny Cream Ale is $15 by me.

If you are drinking to get drunk as your primary motivation, why would you even consider spending more for craft beer?

Three 12-oz beers equal approximately one liter. Even German medical professionals have said that such an amount is not only OK, but can actually have health benefits. Of course U.S. doctors have gone lower, probably at the behest of anti-drunk driving groups (wisely, as this is a much bigger problem in the U.S. than in Germany).

I didn't mean to imply that having that many beers automatically makes you an alcoholic - the suggestion was that if the idea of having less than that is a severe issue for you, your priorities are all wrong. If you love craft beer, but switch to macros just so you can crush a case every week, maybe you don't really love craft beer, maybe you just love getting alcohol into your bloodstream.

Edit: Granted, the way I worded it could easily come off as an accusation of alcoholism - my bad, O.P. - but my honest recommendation is to do what I do and to drink good beer, but way less of it.

Um, I hit up my local bottle shop once a month drop $100, but cheap beer is available locally at breweries here in town. I can get fresh craft for $4-$5 a pour. Some places around town run specials, I've seen $3.00 craft beer pours and one establishment has $1.00 craft pours on Tuesdays. Of course, you do have to drive home after.

And this statement is just flat-out wrong--it's definitely not the case for all BAs. For me, that buzz isn't all that important. The taste, aroma, and just all-out pleasure from drinking a delicious, well-made brew is most important.

I don't ever drink to get drunk. I hate to get drunk. That doesn't mean I don't like a gentle beer buzz. Don't you?

agreed that all those sensory experiences make drinking good beer such a joy but can you honestly say you'd be so passionate about beer if there was no alcohol in it?

If that were the case he'd be able to quit buying pricey craft entirely. He likes craft and he likes some macro stuff and he admittedly likes the buzz. One really can have all of these affinities without contradiction.

I'm as active on here as anybody, and I DEFINITELY don't drink to get a buzz. On average, I open up ONE beer every few weeknights, and when I do, I share it with my fiancee. That means I drink about 6oz of beer when I drink a beer.

I drink beer because I like the flavor, I like the way it compliments my food, and I like the experience of trying all that the craft beer world has to offer.

If I was killing a 6er of good beer a night, I'd be homeless. And I have a pretty decent job. That's a lot to drink and a lot to spend per month. That's almost a car payment.

Probably not because the alcohol does play a part in the overall experience. But that alcohol buzz is definitely not the most important part for me.

I think the OP just likes to drink beer, and he would rather have 6 mediocre ones than 3 high quality. The amoutn of alcohol would probably be very similiar, since your average econo-beer is going to come in sub 5%.

Recently I've been having many pints per night, usually 6. But, I also have been drinking beers in the 3-4% ABV range.
