When I was deployed to the desert, the Becks NA was the favorite, followed by the Heineken NA.

I know this isn't beer, but try some Braggs Limeade- it is good and scratches that itch she may be having, and it is healthy to boot. It can be a bit spendy, but if she likes it you can make it yourself, just send me a message and I can give you the recipe I use.

I think this forum is the perfect place to point out the irony that alcohol is not recommended for pregnant women, while if it weren't for alcohol, most women wouldn't be pregnant in the first place.

Oh, congrats to you and your wife!

no physician would say that drinking a near beer affects the fetus. Truthfully, throughout the world, many women drink (1 small wine glass) while pregnant. A media blitz in the US hammered into us that fetal alcohol syndrome is awful.... it IS, but that's what happens when a pregnant woman gets totally hammered. A 0.5% alcohol drink cannot cause any physiological effects... way too weak. Much more dangerous than a brew would be eating unpasteurized cheeses, cold cuts, undercooked meat and raw greens like alfalfa sprouts (listeria and food poisoning are seriously threats).

That being said, I just gave birth this spring, and spent 9 months w/o any booze (or yummy foods listed above). Near beer is a sad sad thing. It's probably more enjoyable to her palate to find a good alternatives (w/o caffeine). I discovered some really awesome flavored seltzers, decaf teas, Italian sodas, and mocktails at local restaurants.

If she REALLY wants a n/a beer, the best I've had is clausthaler non-alcoholic golden amber.

I did the same thing when my wife was pregnant a couple years ago, and really, there are no good NA's. However, I do remember reading this article at the time and found it the most helpful: http://www.11points.com/Food-Drink/11_Non-Alcoholic_Beers,_Taste_Tested

For the record I thought the regular Clausthauler (not amber - didn't really like that one) and the Beck's (regular as well) were the best that I could find. My sister in law really liked the Odoul's amber, and my wife was just a fan of the regular ol' Odouls.

    Congrats!

I'd steer away from "non alcoholic beer", most of which actually contains ~.5% alcohol. Seems trivial, but no amount of alcohol is good for that little bun in the oven.

I might be able to look past the slight risk if NA beer was just the damn tastiest thing ever, but let's face it... There have been no great advances in that style yet, and most of it is disgusting. Bottom line, just dream about how good that full strength cold one is going to be months from now.

Hello riotontheroad, I understand this post is a bit old by now but I hope I can still help. What I have been drinking and actually enjoying is Kirin Free from Japan's Kirin Ichiban Brewery. It has 0.00% alcohol in it (at least that's what the bottle says) but it makes sense because the recipe is yeast free which means the yeast won't be there to eat the malt sugars (which is how alcohol is created in beer). It actually tastes good too. You can tell it is a NA beer though and it has a bit of a metallic overtone but it's the best NA beer I've had. Hope this helps! Kanpai!

I've never tried any non-alcholic beer so I can't offer suggestions. Congratulations!

My brother only drinks NA beers and has always drank the BMC versions which kinda bums me out. He used to party with me and all our buddies in our early 20's but he had too many and quit for family reasons. That said he quit right before the boom of craft beers so I've always felt he missed out on something special(he too often wonders and asks what certain brews taste like).
Out of sheer dumb luck I stumbled across a NA beer from a local brewery Schmoz. They bottle it, which is awesome, so I picked him up a sixer when our families went camping together last spring and he loved it. While it tastes a little flat it's probably the closest thing to craft beer that I've ever had, and trust me I've tried all those gross NA's before.
Congrats on the baby on the way. PM me and I'd be more than happy to send the mrs. a few bottles if I can score some more.

Only tried one...a LONG time ago. If you're near San Diego, Penn's Best. Low budget and half decent cleaned up version of Iron City. Other than that, lots of luck and congratulations!

It would seem like there would have to be a huge market for someone to come out with a tasty non-alcoholic brew. People looking to drink beer without alcohol are stuck with O'Douls, Becks, Coors Cutter, etc.

Any brewery owners/brewmasters out there want to speak to why this isn't being done?

There's plenty of craft sodas, fine teas, micro roasted coffees, etc.

Non alcoholic beer isn't really beer it's a malt cocktail made via chemistry that doesn't really go with what craft brewers do.

Probably because it's near impossible to get any flavor and body in a beer that light. Weigenstephan has one but I've never seen it around here. I would think the German breweries would be the ones to look for. Not sure if that's the kind of craft you want but it's an option.

Because that low of gravity it would still taste like water. Unless there's a way to get more residual sugars in the beer than fermentable sugars. Yeast is a crazy Fungi!
