I had my first crack at a gose this summer. It wasn't legit Westbrook that everyone goes ape for, but Stillwater gose gone wild. It was a revelation, although the two bombers I drank back to back didn't quit sit right, I would have drank more if I could. Why isn't this a more popular style? Would you like to see a local brewery (bells, founders, 3floyds, fat heads, NG) attempt to brew a regularly released gose style beer?

I tried Westbrook Gose for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and honestly, I don't get the love for it. It reminded me of the saltwater gargle my mother made me use to get rid of a sore throat.

Since so many people seem to be head-over-heels about it, I'm guessing it was a decent representation of the style. I'm fairly open to trying new things, but that was just not for me.

I too thought it very much like a drink mix for tequilla without the tequilla. I just tried anderson valley gose and I like it was more mild than westbrook, less sour but not less tart than westbrook. That's kind of improtant. and I dont' really know how it came out in the rating. BUT I have another to try. I have a gose called troubelsome that I intend to try tomorrow. We shall see how the cards fall on this style of beer.

*edit Well it appears that the milder more balanced approach got less points in the rating but in all fairness westbrook was the first that I tried. Would I have westbrook again - IDK ask me tomorrow after the troubelsome.

Funny you refer to drink mix for tequila. While drinking it, I was thinking it was more like a watered-down margarita and less like beer.

I'm glad I tried it because I know if was from a brewery that I really like, has a good reputation, and was probably well-made. I don't like sours so I shouldn't be surprised that this sourish brew it wasn't for me.

First, as a relative newbie to the site let me thank you both for weighing in on the subject. It is much appreciated. I feel like the saltiness of a gose, that makes the style, is the most polarizing part of the beer. As someone who is not all too familiar with sour/tart style offerings myself, this beer really did it for me. It was nice to taste something completely out of my comfort zone that wasn't completely over the top or gimmicky.

I believe this is true generally across all styles throughout this whole site. If a beer doesn't smack you in the face, it is rated low and deemed boring or 'meh' by many here. I enjoy imperial, double and BA too, but IMO subtle and balanced are under appreciated.
Also, Troublesome is very good; hope you enjoy it.

I really want to try the Stillwater Gose Gone Wild. Hoping that I can find some when I go back to Baltimore in October.

Anderson Valley's gose is pretty tasty.

I adore them, but I never really pick up on "salty" as a significant taste. It might play a role in the back, but I don't think it's in the forefront of Westbrook's, Anderson Valley's, or Ritterguts'.

Agreed, I get a lot more of a tart lemonade flavor in the Westbrook Gose. The salt only seems to come in on the finish, and even then seems fairly mild to me. It's a great style for warm weather.

Haven't had the Stillwater GGW yet, but I really like the Westbrook and AV Gose's. But the best Gose i've had is by Rapp Brewing in St. Pete. A must try.

Gose Gone Wild was the best beer I've tasted this year. Be careful comparing any "regular" gose to that one. You may find that you'll be disappointed.

I think in the coming years, you will see more breweries trying this style. Another decent example is Troublesome from Off Color. That's Chicago, so it really is Midwestern.

Gose gone wild is better than Westbrook and it's not really close IMO. My personal favorite straight gose is Lost Nation's gose by a good margin. Anderson Valley's is passable and very available, but it's not top tier.

Not for me. I don't enjoy this style at all but some do. Apparently it's the next "big thing"

I tried a Gose for the first time yesterday. Anderson Valley. I liked it. I'm no expert on this but I thought it was decent. The salt component wasn't overwhelming.

Pour Decisions made a Gose that is head and shoulders better than all mentioned IMO. Hopefully Bent follows suite.
