Due out at the end of August, the SA lager variety pack will include a helles bock, a double black lager, an imperial pilsner, and The Vixen (a chocolate chili bock). Mainstays Noble Pils and Boston Lager will round out the pack. I was hoping that SA would do an all-lager pack one of these days but this isn't exactly what I was expecting.

Would have liked to see the regular black lager, Noble Pils, their double bock, Boston Lager, and maybe a pale "Festbier" type Marzen. Or maybe have them take a stab at regular Helles.

I could really do without two imperial versions of styles that can always use more "regular" versions (especially schwarzbiers), and then a gimmicky "chocolate chili" bock when a traditional bock would do just fine.

They should turn towards Sierra Nevada for how to properly organize a fall mix pack this year.

Oh well, at least there's no "white ale" forced into this one, even if it's by default.

I don't like Sam Adams stuff (Oktoberfest was OK), but I love your picture / avatar (wtf)! Most people don't know where it comes from.

Yeah, I would have liked them to do a box of true-to-style lagers instead of this. I'll look for the SN fall pack before I'll think about picking this up.

Thanks. I couldn't think of a beer-related avatar to use so I went with a fake beer instead.

depending on price point I may pick one up. costco usually gets 24 packs of SA variety packs for around 24$

I was hoping they'd throw their double bock in there but no dice.

I know Alpine Spring isn't that popular with a lot of folks, but I would have liked to seen it resurrected here.

I'm guessing it's going to be a strong schwarzbier.

After sampling their new Cold Snap spring seasonal, I appreciate Alpine Spring even more than I did before. That was a good beer.

Cold Snap, White Lantern, White Ale, White Christmas........I'm surprised there a White Lager didn't pop up in this mix pack.

Don't forget Whitewater IPA. If I had my way, Sam Adams would avoid wheat malt altogether.

Eh, don't know if I'll jump at this. The only variety pack I usually buy from them is the fall. Also, I've had the Vixen before, which you can buy on it's own, and thought it was pretty decent.

For all practical purposes a "double black lager" would be a Baltic Porter. They probably aren't calling it that because of the whole porter/ale thing.

Double black lager will be something akin to the imperial schwarzbier from Great Lakes/Cigar City the Wandering Pelican which had dark roasted malt notes, well hidden alcohol, and a smooth lagered finish. I'm excited that Sam Adams is doing an all lager variety pack.

helles bock sounds worth a try. might have to buy those alone from places that break the packs open for singles.
