IKEA has lots of cheap glassware too. None of them are labeled in a way that makes any sense (I recall every single one of them saying "best used for pilsner" or something to that effect), but if you know what shape you're looking for, it's there.

Barley wine ale out of my mug which I think is a 16 ounce mug does taste better. The smell actually does impact the taste somehow. I always thought it was nonsense but now I believe.

Always from a glass unless it says...

i got a libby set from walmart for like 10 bucks. Its got 4 different classes a wheat beer glass, a flute, a pint and a mug. I also just recently got 2 tulip glasses from foolproof brewery.

I still have a few more glasses i would like to invest in such as a snifter an oversized wine glass and a spiegelau glass just waiting to find the right ones worth the money!

A reason to use a glass too is a fun test (this is usually in beer in a green or brown bottle most often but also can affect brown bottles). Pour half a beer in a glass and leave it in the bottle while outside in direct light. The beer in the bottle will skunk much faster because the light that gets in the bottle has a harder time leaving as it bounces around and has to work itself out the neck vs the glass which has a much bigger opening as well as clear glass which shouldn't trap light. Or just drink the beer faster :stuck_out_tongue:

I only drink out of glass bottles. No other material. How's that.

The palate-numbing claim is dicey at best (you taste ice cream don't you?), but the dilution idea is completely out the window. Condensation only forms because of a variance in temperature across a medium. The temperature of the inside of the glass against the beer is what it is. No condensation forms there.

Might not a chilled glass make your beer taste more flavourful for a longer amount of time? Maybe, maybe the first sip would be "too cold" but it seems it would keep the beer at/near serving temp for longer?

Pretty sure it is 16. I think walmart in its infinite wisdom is stating 32 because there are two in the package.i

FWIW: the brick and mortars sell them at a good price. I have 4 total.

Not naming names but do the breweries themselves follow this mantra?

Locally I want to say no. Mug club or imperial pint sized glasses seem the norm and no one cares. A shaker pint is generally okay for me. I will say though. I was at yard house, who specializes in 80+ draft beers and was saddened by them putting a hefe in a standard shaker pint. So I do care. But at the same time don't.

Honestly, I think of it like a chef's knife. You can waste a lot of money for a lot of alleged horseshit features, but the one you'll wind up using is the one that's most comfortable in your hand. I'm most comfortable with hefty glasses, so I don't like stemware. And despite what people say about the tastes, the reason bars use all the different glasses is to screw you out of a couple ounces and make a few more bucks.

Actually, the palate numbing effect is the reason most ice creams are flavored with extracts, as the flavor has to be very intense to get through.

I really don't like the 14-ounce "Shaker" pint glasses a lot of bars use. Unless you are savvy, you will never know you are getting ripped off a couple ounces for your $5+

The ones that drive me nuts are the smaller Guiness and Imperial pint glasses. Same concept as the 14's, of looking like more than it is. One bar here, actually didn't switch them all out, and you could compare the glasses side by side with the Guinness ones.

Yes, of course glassware is important for drinking any alcoholic substance from Single-malt whiskey (in a Glencairn whisky glass) to a Pinot Noir (in a Pinot Noir wine glass) not only for appearance but for aroma as well.

With beer glassware is doubly important due to the fact that beer has a head (that white thing on top) and unless you have a glass with laser etching on the bottom of the glass you are unlikely to get a head that sticks around, and who doesn't like a good bit of head?

Here (for anyone new to craft beer) are the three most important glasses to obtain when starting out:

    1. Nonic pint (easily the best go to glass and they usually have laser etching on the base)
    2. Belgian chalice or goblet (which all the Trappist brewers make fine examples of)
    3. Weizen glass (if you love Weizens and will drink a lot of them) or a Tulip glass (if Weizens aren't a big deal for you)

Now go forth I say and drinketh beer with great merriment!

Are you kidding me? Stick a mug in a freezer (i.e. chilled glass) and tell me what you see on the inside of the glass as well as the outside after a couple of hours. The moisture on the glass has since frozen and should now both be on the outside, as well as inside. If there is no moisture on the glass at all, then you live in a vacuum or the desert. And palate numbing from cold liquid dicey? Again, really? Drink an ice cold beer, then drink that same beer at room temperature. Do not even for one second try to tell me that more flavor is noticeable on the room temp pour. If you are going to rebut with "scientific" claims, then provide some rational behind your opinion.

and yes, you taste ice cream smart ass. But that doesn't mean the frozen temperature still doesn't tone down flavor. The same bowl of ice cream would taste a bit different if liquid at room temp. Not so drastic that you'd be blown away at the differences. But we are on a site dedicate to the advocacy of good beers. If you are trying to get the most out of a beverage, why not take some precautionary steps to make sure that you do so (i.e. correct serving temperatures, proper glassware, etc). It shouldn't be ridiculous for me to mention the dude may want to think about what he is doing before he does it, regardless of his final decision, because dude I really don't care.

Highly recommend Simon Pearce hand blown bar ware from VT. They have killer heavy duty built-for-the-armegeddon pint glasses, snifters, tankards, pilsner glasses and this gorgeous large tulip. The stuff ain't cheap -- they do sell 2nds at the store for a discount -- but it's well worth it if you are using it every day.
