As for Black Raven, I have had the following: Pour les oiseaux, old birdbrain, beaktweaker, wisdom seeker, and Grandfather Raven. Of those, Grandfather Raven and Old Birdbrain were exceptional (like top 10s in Washington), but the other three completely forgettable, and actually downright disappointing. Every IPA from Fremont and Reuben's were superior to wisdom seeker and beaktweaker. Pour Les Oiseaux was one of the worst crafted saisons in my book (tasted like a newcastle slightly soured and bad enough for me to remember off the top of my head), and I don't get the ratings on that one.

I hope so! Their website says they're going to start small tours again this month so I posted on the Facebook page letting them know I was interested. Paul (I assume, unless someone else runs his social media) liked my comment but no further info... I'm going to call them tomorrow or Saturday and try to coordinate a visit.

Good to know, especially since RIS and BW are two huge favorites of mine. I will definitely be checking them out.

Trip is officially in limbo as of right now sadly. I was the middle vehicle in a three car accident coming home from work yesterday so my poor car is being towed to a repair shop this morning.... FML

Ouch, sorry to hear that, man. I hope no one was badly injured.

Thankfully no one was hurt - at least not that we know of since the two vehicles who caused the accident fled the scene.

Picked up my rental this morning (gotta love USAA) and it looks like I have unlimited miles, so depending on how long my repairs are, I might be able to salvage part of this trip.

Shit. I've been reading this thread and living through you vicariously. Great recommendations all. I need to know how the trip went (I just spent 5 minutes reading this thread that I can't get back. I kid, i kid.). I hope you get to travel and am looking forward to hear about your exploits.

Just tell the repair shop you're going on vacation, they'll probably slide ya back a few slots. Might as well put the miles on the rent-a-racer.

I went in yesterday and the rough estimate I got was at least 2-3 weeks before I'd be back driving. It's a brand new Mazda and parts are expensive and super hard to get right now. So, I double checked the fine print in my rental agreement and decided to go ahead and make this trip happen!

Operation August Beer-Cation is officially a go. I'll be leaving for Missoula on Wednesday so thanks again for all the advice and encouragement!

Quick update: exchanged a few emails with Paul from The Ale Apothecary and it looks like I am good for a visit on the 21st so this trip is already heading in a great direction!

Glad you're still able to make the trip! A "beer-cation" sounds outstanding, and I'd be super-pissed if some jackhole who put me in a wreck made me have to give one up. Also glad to hear you didn't get dinged up yourself. My one and only (thankfully) car crash included cracked ribs, which would make long-distance driving problematic.

You won't be disappointed if the one beer I've ever been fortunate to try from them is any indication. Enjoy the trip!

It was a nerve-wracking 72 hours to be sure, but like you said, I can't complain walking away injury free and it all seems to be falling in to place now so I am stoked.

I've got several friends in Seattle/Tacoma that I'll be meeting up with, but the Oregon leg of this journey is solo. No worries to me though, I always seem to find fellow beer enthusiasts to chat up at every brewery I find myself at!

Assume you mean the Visiting Portland link? @John_M, how would you feel about making the most current edition a sticky?

Will do. I am sure he'll either be ecstatic or exhausted with the number of questions I am bound to ask. As a lover of beer and home brewer, there is no better experience for me than nerding out with fellow beer enthusiasts.

Haha yeah it probably should be. I know I was referencing it before even making this thread, but I needed some more advice, both specific and general.

Creating a permanent sticky that lists recommended or top brewery and/or beer bar destinations for various cities has been suggested previously in a variety of forums. I think the concern is that top and/or favorite destinations is something that's constantly changing, is not something that is easily agreed upon, and so will just end up creating more arguments and discord. I think the bros are also concerned that it's a "permanent" sticky that the moderator staff will be asked to constantly update or change, and then for that matter, who gets to decide when an addition or change is warranted?

At least that's my understanding of the concerns they have in that area (and the reason they've been opposed to the idea in the past).
