Rochefort 10, good beer and I think if it was just something I picked up instead of having and OMG!!! Moment that cost me 9 bucks i would have enjoyed it more. Call me crazy but as far as Trappists go I would rate it at about 4th or 5th place behind more easily attainable less expensive beers.

My most recent semi-let downs were Kern River Citra and Peche n Brett. Didn't give up a ton for them though, so not a huge deal. So far I've been fortunate to be very happy with what I've received every time a trade has involved a really hard to get bottle.

I like you logic. Sound reasoning and permission to drink more beer.

I first got Pliny as an extra in a trade. While I had that trade going on, I was doing two other trades for Pliny. At one time I had 9 in my presence with 3 different bottling dates. I tried all three. After drinking all 3 with different bottling dates I decided...
    1. it didn't have enough citrus aroma or taste for me and what I like in that style
    2. it was too malty
    3. the west coast hype machine and beer worshipers for a very old school "good" beer have really built this thing up and it's simply a good beer to me.
    4. It wasn't hoppy enough for me in flavor

So, I'm sorry I don't fit the mold of sampling a beer once and not liking it. I wanted to like it. I wanted to want to take a bath in it. But, I didn't. I traded the rest away as soon as I could. I think I know what I like and love. I definitely didn't love Pliny. If it was in a bar, I would order it if my choices were slim.

Also, I think it's kind of ridiculous when everyone says, "well, it tastes different every time." That's what I want. Not. Wouldn't you want your product to stay the same, unless you have a recipe change?

So, maybe the three I had with three different bottling dates were from the "they don't taste as good batch." We'll go with that.

Heady Topper. While it's a great IPA, not clear how it became #1. Now double sunshine or Ephraim, those were beyond great.

Tom, that is an interesting thought. I was thinking along the lines that each individual bottle (or draft pint) will vary from one drinking experience to another; in other words each beer will indeed be different. In the context of a hoppy beer that could translate to a differing hop presence due to age of the beer (or how the beer was stored/transported).

You discussion topic that our palates will vary per drinking experience is a valid concept as well.

I suppose the summation is that the beer will vary and our perceptions (palate) will vary per each given drinking experience.

    Cheers!

P.S. I suppose another variable is batch to batch variation from the brewery.

I was a little disappointed with Mexican Cake. It was almost too spicy for me to enjoy. Would age have allowed the peppers to mellow?

For me, the biggest hype let-down was Hopslam. that beer is kind of a misnomer, IMO. and i still don't see why everyone talks up Two Hearted. it's such a mediocre IPA, to me.

I agree a fresh Heady is mind blowing, but so is a fresh growler of Pliny.

none. if you are going to be disappointed due to price/perception of overpricing or hype you shouldn't buy it IMO. I am happy to try anything I haven't had. If I don't like it or think it was worth the $$ spent I don't buy it again.

I am always left smiling and satisfied

"It tastes different every time," is not the same as "Vinnie can't brew a batch to be consistent." Consider:

    1) Your palate, and your subjective experiences, are very subject to bias and change. It's not something you can truly recognize, most of the time. The setting, the pace, the beers you've had the same day - or previous days, truly - affect your perception of the beer. The beer can be identical, while tasting different every time.

    2) Drinking a beer on tap, at the brewery, is quite different than drinking a beer shipped across the damn country. It takes about a week for CA beers to reach me here in CT. So, brew-bottle-distribute-purchase-ship-consume. How long do you think that takes? If you don't think every single bottle is going to be different after going through a multiple week, multiple temperature, multiple light exposure level process, you're mistaken.

So don't misunderstand me. Not every Heady I have had tastes different, but the majority of them I bought at the source, and controlled the process of storage and refrigeration. I chose when to consume them, and however much they had degraded, they had all done so equally. Any difference between cans is more or less on me, my palate, and my subjectivity.

I have no such control over Pliny, and as a consequence, they have all tasted at least slightly different. Some are fruitier; some are staler; some are pine-ier (not a word, but whatever; "more resinous" might be a better description). It's not something you can 100% avoid, and it has nothing to do with the quality or consistency of the brewer.
