A local group of beer brewers, drinkers and reviewers from Savannah called Brew / Drink / Run (they run off the beer they drink), posted some good tips for bottle shares. I know most of some of these are common sense for people that have been sharing bottles of beer with friends and other advocates, but I thought I would post these for people that are new to it.

    1. The more the merrier.
    2. Bottle limits strictly enforced.
    3. Variety is the spice of life.
    4. Sequence your drinking “playlist”.
    5. Take your time.
    6. Hydration, hydration, hydration.
    7. Snack attack.
    8. Show your appreciation.
    9. Take care of each other.
    10. Why so serious?

I'd agree with all of these except for #1. I've been to countless bottle shares and the worst ones are absolutely the ones where there are like 15+ people and you can barely see the tiny amount of beer in your glass, let alone taste it. I'd say somewhere between 5-10 is the perfect number of people for a bottle share.

I would say be an individual. Go to the bottle share and proudly share all your stuff but don't try to drink everything - depending on how much there is. Pace your self to your personal pace. Drink in, enjoy everything you try and remember "tick tock" - it's not a race to see how many you can shove down. Eat a little something . . . that can't hurt you!

I would also add... Try your best to find something interesting. Don't just stop by your local grocery store and buy whatever 22 of IPA is on sale. I know this should be common sense but there is often 'that guy' who brings the average stuff and helps himself to large amounts of the good stuff. Don't be that guy.

How about the most important rule? When you can no longer really taste the differences, call it at night. If you need more to drink, have regular craft brew.

Don't waste rare finds(trading, store or otherwise) when you won't really enjoy it.

Also I think 4-5 people max is a good number if you want to actually taste each bottle opened.

I recently started hosting a weekly bottle share at my house for close friends. It's been a lot of fun so far! The best part about it is that most of the folks have different favorite styles so it makes for a really adventurous tasting. Great variety last week:

what do they mean by "strict bottle limits?"

The added rules brought up here are great.

One thing my friends and I do instead of a playlist, is go in order by who had to travel the farthest to get there. So the person who traveled the farthest gets first pick, the second farthest gets second, etc until we start over again. The "picks" are made once somebody needs a fresh beer.

People usually go for different styles between each beer this way, just to mix things up.

There are rules, and sometimes there are no rules.

    Most importantly have fun.

I've been to a bottle share where each of us brought 3-4 bombers or 750ml bottles, several of them were 15%+ abv. It was a blast, but ran a lot later than we thought because we were taking our time with those big beers.

I try to hold it to 4 or 5 friends. Many more than that and they seem to form their own little clicks and everyone does not get to sample everything. Thats just a comfortable number for me, and the snacks are afordable for that number.

Yep, had it right towards the end. We took a break before the last 2 beers after that one to really cleanse the palate haha

Some of my favorite bottle share experiences have broke nearly every single rule listed there. Great guideline for someone who has limited bottle share experience, I just prefer to wing it at this point.

Never tried a beer sharing event, but would love to (Philly area?). I would think 10 participants, maximum, with about half dozen the optimum. I'd love to do a BIG BEER (only) SHARE....nothing lower than 11%
