Considering the beer mecca that MN has become lately, where the hell is our version of Westbrook Gose? I mean, where is our sour beer in a 6 pack for $11? WHERE I ask?!?

Im sure many will say 'we have a lot of sour options', and although you're more or less right, name 1 really good sour I can get in a 6 pack for $11. Where is the MN version of Westbrook Gose? I could drink that beer every day and I long for a brewery here to do something similar.

I love Surly Misanthrope, but Im totally over bombers. I want a sour I can afford to drink every day! I'd even (begrudgingly) settle for a $14/4 pack of pints...anyone hear of anything like this in the plans for a brewery? It seems like a small start up brewery could be an overnight sensation if they made a solid cheap sour. I know I would personally drink enough to get them off the ground!

So I plead to any brewery that distributes to MN...Please make a solid, cheap, readily available, year round sour. It doesn't have to be anything crazy, just sour, good, cheap, and plentiful like Westbrook Gose.

    Anyone feel the same?

We have Off Color Troublesome (gose) in 6 packs on shelves. I plan on picking up a pack tonight when I am off of work. It is not as good as the WB Gose but it is similar

In reality, not many markets have access to a cheap 6 pack of sours, much less one as good as Westbrook Gose. I still consider MN a sour wasteland, at least when talking about top class options. Stillwater's GGW was a very welcome entry which I hope gets brewed again and comes back in greater quantities.

Havent had this one. Know of any stores off hand that have it near new brighton/brooklyn center/brooklyn park/maple grove/plymouth?

Also, x2 to sour wasteland. Think I can just buy lactic acid and pour some in my beer? That will give me my fix

Princeton's has it on the shelves right now and I have seen it on the shelves at Haskels in Maple Grove as well.

I wish that Troublesome was as sour as Westbrook, although it's still good beer.

I'm hoping this is a niche that Indeed could fill with its sour program they started. It would be awesome if they choose to go with cans over bombers. Maybe drop them a suggestion?

Hey @IndeedBrewing , you should take your awesomeness to the next level and can your sours. (actually if they did this, I think it would take their awesomeness up a few levels)

    Great idea Johnny

The problem with something like this is that it could really only be filled by a couple of sour styles (at least at the price points you're talking about). Many/most sours made in the US end up in a barrel for some period of time, which really amps up the cost. So we'd mostly be talking about beers like Gose and Berlinner Weisse. Both awesome styles that are making a serious resurgence of late, but still very marginal styles, even in the sour part of the beer world.

Valid point, but most sours do not need new barrels each time like a whiskey barrel (or any BA) beer. Belgian sours are just fermented in large wood vats that are constantly reused, not replaced. Im sure you know, but the vats actually get better with time as the culture grows into the wood. Point being, there is an upfront cost to get the wood vats, but its a 1 time cost, not like BA beer that needs new barrels each batch. It cant be too much different than buying a commercial fermenter.

I F'n love it! :grinning: Can you tell?

Somewhat of a tangent but thinking about this got me wondering.....do you think Surly/Indeed would ever can a beer like Misanthrope? Not regarding price point (although that's also an issue..), I just can't think of a beer w/ Brett that has been canned. Wonder if there's logistical/contamination roadblocks there.

Obviously, Brett is not the only road to "sour", and I'd join the chorus that would love to see a WBrook Gose equivalent.
A bit higher price point, but I think Troublesome is a nice beer. Minnesota should be seeing some bottles of Off Color's Berliner pretty soon as well.

Wasn't really including the cost of the barrels themselves into the calculus, but rather the storage area. To make enough of something to can it and then barrel age it is going to take some space. Space costs money. I'm not saying its insanely expensive, but it does mean that a $11 6-pack is going to be tough to pull off for a barrel-aged beer. And why Gose and Berliner Weisse -can- pull it off. That's the equivalent of a $3.50 or so bomber.

I think his more important point was the time. It takes quite a while to develop the degree of sourness most people expect these days, unless you are adding acids artificially (as many goses including Westbrook do). Slow turnover is a bigger problem for a smaller brewery with less space.

But if Westbrook is doing it (and selling the h>ll out of it), you'd think we should see more breweries doing goses and berlinners in 6/4 pack format. Goosetown soured up a bit?

Evil Twin Nomader Weiss is going to start showing up this week in the Twin Cities. Should be mid-teens a 6pk.

You nailed the thought that prompted this thread. Westbrook is basically known for that beer by itself. Its an easy bandwagon for an unknown to get on and have an instant hit. The market is far from saturated in the cheap sour area (compared to another pilsner, pale ale, IPA yada yada...I know every brewery needs the 'standard lineup' but if you're just going to make a mediocre pale ale, IPA, stout like many many breweries, save your time and make something unique and good!) I liked goosetown, but thought it didnt have much going on flavor wise. Same with Ludid Goslar.

Good point about the time to maturity. (*mumbles*...damn time...)

Anderson Valley is distributed in Wisconsin and the Find Our Beer tool on the AVBC website says The Kimmie, The Yink & The Holy Gose is/has been available at Casanova's. I imagine that is the beer you are referring to. Has anyone run into it at the Nova? Is it still available and worth the drive?

My only experience with Anderson Valley is the Summer Solstice––not that it was terrible, but I'm still trying to decide if it was a cream soda or a beer.
