I've never drank what a rabid beer geek (RBD - the ones who police exactly what does and doesn't qualify) would describe as a whale

Harder to find beer (dolphin) that didn't quite live up to my expectations (expectations based on my preference for the style, admiration for the brewery and their other offerings etc, rather than any perceived "hype") would probably be something like Everett

I was going to say the same thing. My very first 120 I was still ignorant about the whole craft beer thing and I thought it was supposed to be the best beer out there. Drank it fresh thinking it was going to be an actual IPA and was disappointed. It's actually a barley wine that needs to be aged 1-2+ for you to actually enjoy it. Boozy lovers will appreciate it fresh though but I wont drink one younger than 2 years since I've had the 2012 not too long ago.

Probably because those are NOT sours, nor do they claim to be. But for some reason people keep calling them "sours".

Belgian Red, Serendipity, Raspberry Tart, & Strawberry Rhubarb are not sours, they are fruit beers. Yes they taste like fruit soda. I think they are pretty good, but if you are expecting a sour you will be let down.

If you want a real NG sour try VSB, VSP, Wild Sour, Thumbprint Oud Bruin, Thumbprint Enigma, R&D Gueuze...

    Perennial Abraxas.

On my road trip from Memphis to Tulsa to KC to STL to New Glarus, I had it in KC and spent $37 for it at a bar because I wasn't sure if I'd ever get to try it. My friends had built it up to the point of saying it was better than Bomb! (which is one of my all-time favorite beers).

I went the first half of the drinking experience trying to force myself into thinking it was better than Bomb! I really wanted it to be that good. It just didn't reach that level. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine beer but didn't live up to the hype for me.

Double Sunshine - Extremely spicy. I like my (D)IPAs clean. This was a dirty DIPA.
Big Bad Baptist - Way the fuck too much coffee. It's supposed to be beer. I tasted no beer.
BCBBW - Definitely tasty, but it was too sweet even for me, and I like sweet beers.
    Hopslam - Just nothing special.
Abner - Too dry, and an uninteresting flavor. Double Citra was a googol times better.
Mexican Cake - Too much pepper. I was expecting it to taste like Bomb! without the coffee, but it was all pepper.

Pliny the Elder for me. It is good but I never really found it to be life altering as so many people were trying to tell me.

Not a whale, but I really didn't expect the $30 bottle of Bois from The Bruery I bought to be so damn mediocre. On the plus side, I was almost completely justified skipping Fruet the year before and Sucre the year after... :stuck_out_tongue:

I second this. Went from whales, to dolphins, to minnows, to sand snails, and then just all their poop piled up at the bottom.

HAHA. I just went back and looked. The thread went from Darklords, Plinys and others, then a few good quality brews like gumballhead and sucks... then "Anything from Rogue". HAHAHAHA

    Voodoo Doughnut.

Edit: Admittedly, the hype was before people were actually able to try it. I thought it was going to be good as the flavors were supposedly going to imitate those of the world-famous doughnut shop.

Funny thing is that the donut from Voodoo sucks also (I was dumb enough to wait in line to buy it, took one bite and threw it in the trash). A couple of homeless guys (which is somewhat redundant in downtown Portland) laughed at me for buying it - and, no, they had absolutely no interest in salvaging it.

Exactly. Now that everyone down here knows it sucks, it's a shelf turd. I don't know why Rogue even bothers.

For me, it was Heady that underwhelmed. We did a taste-test against Pliny the Elder and found PtE to be much more likable. Whatever floats your boat, but there are BMC brews I'd tug on all day before trying any more Heady Topper.

Darklord by far. I recently tasted a 6 year vertical and they were all awful.
