What was your latest "pleasantly surprised" beer?

    I picked up a six pack of Hop Shock IPA's tonight. When I got home, I looked at the canning date...4/16/14...expecting the worst, I popped one and found a fairly tropical, slightly malt forward beer. I am not dissapointed in this four month old IPA.

    So what about you, BA? What's the last beer that you had fairly low hopes for and actually wowed you a bit?

    July beach week, bought a sixer of Westbrook One Claw, thought it was terrific, much better IMO than their IPA.

    Weyerbacher Heresy. Never a big fuss about it. Actually picked it up in a mixed 6. Very tasty.

    Hintachino Nest Red Rice Ale, bought it at "Whole Foods" as a single to sample a Japanese beer I never saw over in Japan; it was amazing. I was expecting an old skunky brew that may have been on the shelf to long but it was crisp and a great beer. Pricey, but if you haven't tried it before, I definitely recommend it.

    Kona Castaway IPA. I like Kona but nothing ever blows me away. This was really good with a citrus/tropical fruit burst of flavor.

    Narwhal, was thinking for whatever reason it would be more hop forward than it was. The 4 packs I found are 2013 so I'm thinking that has a lot to do with it, either way it wowed me enough that I went back for a bunch more. Also Rogue Dead Guy Ale got my attention, First from Rogue I really like. Picked up a single looking for something new to try, loved the artwork (that's a different thread).

    Stone's Coffee Milk Stout. It didn't get rave reviews here but I thought it was very good. It's a bit thin but at 4.2 percent abv that's to be expected. In terms of the flavor profile it was pretty spot on.

    O'doul's. I had a bottle after a Foster's lager on tap and was blown away! Although considering it was after a Foster's, pretty much anything would have been good. Crappy beer selection at Outback.
