    Who's the better beer state

    California V.S. Vermont

I'm kind of bias since living a drive away from Vermont but cali has so many great breweries. In my opinion Vermont is more new school and cali is more established and classic.

I'd still have to go with Vermont.

I mean considering Cali is like 20 Vermonts this one is pretty easy. That being said Hill Farmstead and Alchemist are awesome.

    Cali wins that one, too.

This may not work very well. Try something harder, like New Mexico vs Tennessee

I guess it basically comes down to how you define "best". In terms of an overall "aggregate", no state can really touch California. But if you defined it in terms of some sort of "quality density", be it by area or population, I could easily see Vermont being the choice.

Flipping it, California is so large and populated that it might barely nudge the Top 10 in the latter metric, while Vermont would likely fall outside the Top 15 in the former.

I'd say Michigan (my state) ranks fairly high (maybe top 5-8 or so) in both of these metrics, but it wouldn't be top 3 in either.

Virginia vs North Carolina  NC probably has us beat, but we are gaining.

Well, since Cali is 17x larger than Vermont it needs to be at least 17x better just to be even ( 1 sq mi to 1 sq mi or "1 on 1").
Based on that it's Vermont all day long.

Haha - my girlfriend pointed out you are overstating, it's only 17 Vermonts (to be fair, she told me this right before I read your post). Overall, I think the OP will find the volume will make his claim hard to find a lot of support, especially considering the amount of exposure and from CA along with a decent number of those that are of high quality have to tip the scales to the larger.

Edit: oops - sorry to repeat the 17x number.. apparently we have some other quick Googlers out there

There's no amount of awesomeness in the VT breweries that can overcome the volume of CA breweries (many of which are pretty awesome too). Not a dis against VT, just that you'd have to twist logic pretty hard to come out in VT's favor.

If you aren't counting the west coast breweries "outposts", I think it's pretty close from what I've seen out of VA and NC, but would probably have to agree, NC has a slight edge now.

Since I was recently in Maine, I was thinking Maine vs Virginia. Maine has the top spots summed up (Allagash and Maine), but I wasn't overly impressed with the smaller brewery offerings.

    It's "vs." not "V.S."

"vs." is an abbreviation for "versus" from the Latin meaning "turned towards" as in turned to oppose.
