If it IS Expo, they should stay away from bottling and just keep it kegged and send it to various beer bars all over CA to spread the wealth.

    Kinda like PtY.

Then Societe (B.Mosaic and Roustabout), BallastPoint (Grapefruit Sculpin), Beachwood (many), NAW (TT and Showers i.e. Citra and Nelson) and many other CA breweries can follow suit.

Just imagine a full year-round of this..

Erm…? Societe already only kegs their IPAs and sends it out. And though I don’t think they’ve done much in LA, they’re in many parts of SD and some parts of NorCal.

I think he just meant the greater keg distribution part. In fact, the no bottles/cans part of Societe is what he seems to be suggesting that Alpine do.

Am I the only one that thinks the owner of Alpine is the idiot here???? He punished everyone for the work of one person. What a joke.

Ummm, this actually occurs a lot in many industries and we can even use various historical moments. None of which are relevant to the post and most will probably land me quite a bit of backlash from the community, but I can assure you, there are plenty of instances where this is actually the norm.

Far more than one person pushing his buttons - that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Besides, Pat is the Beer ****, and Alpine is the Beer Kitchen.

A small percentage then..... The exact number doesn't matter. The fact that this policy is a joke still stands. When people in charge of businesses make decisions like this it drives me nuts. It's so obvious this is the wrong decision. Sooooooo freaking frustrating.......

He wrote in their newsletter that if anyone sold a growler on eBay he'd stop selling growlers, with a similar message on the white board in their brewery. Then someone sold one. Seems pretty obvious what he was going to do after that...

And while I wish we had growler fills back, I'm not entirely sure how that was the wrong choice for them. They're going to sell out of Expo regardless, and the $/oz cost of their growlers is definitely less than their bottles.

Here's the thing - they do stuff like this all the time, and all the beer tickers that complain here about still keep buying. I bet you have a bunch of Alpine in your fridge right now. LOL

Sadly no, I don't agree...was merely posting that what you consider to be an idiot is actually done quite often and again at various large stages in history, both US and world. Now while some (such as yourself) see it as idiocy, others may see it as protecting their brand or advancing forward while restricting their "invention" (their brew in this case) from seeing it get abused.

Common examples that won't get be banned on this board would be ticket scalpers. Idiots all of them...but....they have the capital to front for those tickets and in turn will yield a profit at the expense of those unable to click fast on ticketmaster or even remember the event went on sale that morning. All of us could do the exact same thing but don't for whatever the reason.

Pat protecting his beer...yeah...I would do the same in his shoes. And while I would be called an idiot by some I can always sit back and laugh as those same idiot-name-callers buy my stock.

Not sure why you'd feel dumber here. It's been made clear why the decision was made, what's hard to comprehend? He cut back on the number of to-go bottles too, because people were buying only to resell in their stores. Is he an idiot for that too?

I have a story to share in relation to this comment.

About six years ago, I made my very first trek to Alpine from Orange County. I took the day off and made the drive, but like an idiot, I hadn't considered that they wouldn't be open on a Monday. When I arrived I realized it was closed, but they had a screen door that I could peer through. I saw an individual through the door (who I later found out was Pat) and I meekly told him that I drove all the way from Orange County. I mentioned that I realized that he was closed, but would there be any way that he could sell me a couple bottles as I had brought cash, no change needed. I had naively thought that making the long drive from Orange County would actually be endearing to a small brewery like this. But we all know now that Pat isn't especially fond of folks outside of San Diego. I wouldn't have been offended had he politely declined to sell me beer, but he walked to the door and proceeded to slam the main door shut (no shit) while shouting, "We're closed!" I'm the asshole though, because I still buy his beer. I keep telling myself that I have the upper hand as I swear I don't buy as much Alpine beer that I normally would, had he been nicer. That'll show him. :grinning:

FYI SageO, BTs BBQ in HB puts a keg up almost every week. And it usually kicks after 3-4 days. They've had the Pupil on 3 times already. Bachelor & Apprentice shows up often as well as some of their other releases. I've seen it at Beachwood SB and LB but nothing like BTs. Needless to say I hit BTs once a week. I stop in Societe on my way back to HB after my Alpine visit. But now I can run to BTs for a glass or two every week.

What you must remember is that every ounce of beer they make they sell. If the demand outweighs the supply and ones customer service skills are, to be nice to Alpine I will just call them weak, the motivation to give you some beer just isint there. Plus anyone who goes there knows that for some reason getting 6 bottles and a growler fill at Alpine takes them about 10 minutes and they are brewing excellent beer during that time so Whatever they are doing is working. Nelson is the greatest beer on the planet and most of their other beers are excellent as well.
