I have a lot of good breweries/brewpubs in my area, but there's a couple really bad ones that still keep chugging along and it amazes me they're still in business. None of these places get positive hype in the local beer scene or tap handles at the local beer bars, but yet they're still around and I was wondering if anyone else see this where they live?

No. Don't see that around here. The badly run ones don't last more than about a year or two. That said, I see a few places I personally don't care for very much staying open but that's to be expected since different people like different things.

Yes. There are a few in my area too. One is in a little town(sadly my in laws are muggers there), it's a quaint downtown shopping area with poor options for beer so this brewery draws a little. The beer has not improved in the few years they've been open. Very thin almost watered down beer and the servers are poor to boot! Add to that they have no kitchen, they bring in food from the joint next store and even put a surcharge on it. I honestly do not know how this place makes it other than location alone. With so many great choices for breweries in W. MI this one should have been closed by now.

I think that brewpubs are an exception due to the food/restaurant element. They are not in business solely for beer so they can still thrive with mediocre to poor beer. Unless there food is bad too and that would be just sad.

Bad breweries on the other hand, I can't figure out.

There must be quite a few bad breweries/brewpubs out there since after all, there's quite a lot of bad beer out there and it's got to come from somewhere.

I live in Chester County and there's a brewery in a local college town that I can't believe is still in business, plus they're getting ready to go into a larger location. It amazes me they're still in business let alone growing. There's also another example in Central PA that makes undrinkable beer, but continues to grow.

Well its always a matter of opinion. Quite frankly. but yea we got many of them. I think part of it is large college crowds and many tourists. Then again I do not understand the hop bomb thing either so what do I know?? nada. just an engineer by trade and I had a few biz go south, so they must know a trick or two? LOL

Seriously though it must be the people. I seen this effect. lets say you have a crowd of friends and you go into a place that know you and that knows you. automatically that "place" will "Seem" better..

I always say you can tell how good a place is by going into places with no friends and that do not know you and then see how you are treated....that first impression is usually right. Cold call as they call it. I be in many of these highly rated places cold and they fail badly.:slight_frown:

Then you got the beer angle, the seats, and then whatever else it is your looking for in a pub.

To me the place has to have friendly folks that are NOT types that ignore you for pretty girls and friends. The beer has to be served right and you should NOT be waiting for that second one if you drink the first one down in 5 minutes. Of course this is me going into a place when it opens and its NOT crowded. The key to a good bar for me is chairs I can sit in for hours.

    Clean bathrooms, lol. etc etc.

it depends on what you mean by "bad"?

Are we talking technically flawed, infected, or just not to your taste?

Yeah. An annonymous online poster saying a brewpub or brewery is "bad" isn't specific enough for me to put much merit in the statement. Specifics please.

Besides, I think there's a huge disconnect between what people on this site think about beers and breweries than what the larger beer drinking public thinks, which is where the majority of a brewery's profits are likely coming from. We tend to forget that we are a niche within a niche.

I am going to name names (now that the place did go out of business), There were two brewpubs, Gettysburg Brewing Company which was awesome, but they closed and Gettysbrew which was horrible (described once as a vomitorium) and they stayed open for years. Fortunately Gettysbrew has been replaced by the Battlefield Brew Works and I like the Civil War again.

They're still in business for the same reason Olive Garden is still in business.

Technically flawed and just not up to par with the other breweries in the area.

Because when you're there, you're family...and you can't tell family to close down.

If my family opened a restaurant that served that quality of Italian food I'd change my last name.
