Last night I had my 3rd commercially brewed dark Saison. Needless to say I was not impressed. Of course all of mine so far have been local. I am not a fan of dark Saison, and I think its so far away from the "style" of a farm house ale, that it's something new. Does any know of a really good one? So I could maybe have a base line to judge from.

I know it could be a home brew topic but I figure I ask here first.

    Thanks!

Love Saison. Never had a dark though, I'd imagine it tastes nothing like a Saison.

HF Edith was good. And I always get mixed up with the Civil Disobedience series, but I feel like one or two of them have been dark

    A Saison Darkly

As suspected by the previous poster, it does not taste much like a true-to-style saison. But with that said.. it is one fine tasting beer.

Yeah, Saison Darkly isn't bad but nothing awesome IMO. The only one I've had and truly enjoyed was GI Pepe Nero (RIP). The Stone collab, The Perfect Crime, was good on-tap but not so good in the bottle. Other than those three, all the other black/dark saisons I've had have had muddled, incohesive flavors. I agree with you azorie that they don't even really taste like saisons but rather a yeasty stout or porter. I guess the verdict's still out since I have had ones that were tasty but, overall, it's definitely not a revolutionary invention.

Forest & Main's Manu Negra is a sour saison that's pretty dark, and is damn tasty.

wow can I steal you words for my review? muddled yep that is it alright. It's like a porter or a brown beer and something else, and the examples I had are nothing like any Saison flavors I expect. thanks!

I love dark saisons, they taste very similar to regular saisons and have similar crisp, palate cleansing properties, the only difference is that many of the dark saisons finish off like a stout, some have an extreme bitter finish such as that of St. Feuillien by Greenflash. The best one I've had was Prairie's Funky Galaxy, that one was smooth!!

dark saisons could be considered a "warm weather porter". Of all the ones I've tried, they are typically a lighter bodied, less roasty, and more effervescent porter.

And here I thought porters were "warm weather porters"... I guess I'm doing it wrong

Not any that make think conventional Saisons are doing it all wrong...

boulevard brought a really nice one to one of the beeradvocate fests a couple years back. was a standout for me.

fairly sure i've had one from hill farmstead that was amazing, not unlike every hill farmstead saison.

beyond that nothing comes to mind.

Funky Galaxy and Jolly Pumpkin's Bam Noire are the best of the few I've had. Not sure I'd call either of them "great" but they were both pretty damn good.

never had it on tap, but definitely agree on The Perfect Crime not being good out of the bottle. Kind of turned me off to the whole dark saision thing
